Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is designed as the first year of a two-year kindergarten program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate. EC Section 48000 [d].

Students who participate in TK will attend school daily for a partial day, including a scheduled lunch and recess. Contact your neighborhood school for specific hours. Extended Student Services (ESS) offers before and after school care programs. Before-school programs are limited to late start schools (8:45, 8:55) -- see Start and Dismissal Times for school listings. Enrollment for ESS is a separate process. Please click on the EXTENDED STUDENT SERVICES link for additional information on ESS.

For the 2023-24 school year, if your child's 5th birthday is between September 2, 2023 and April 2, 2024 (born between September 2, 2018 and April 2, 2019), they will be eligible to enroll in Transitional Kindergarten.*

The following chart is helpful to determine enrollment in PUSD Kindergarten, Transitional Kindergarten, or Preschool:

*For students who are technically eligible for Kindergarten with birthdays between June 1 and September 1, but whose parents would like them to attend TK rather than Kindergarten, you must first enroll your child in their age appropriate grade of Kindergarten. Parents of eligible students will have an opportunity to add their student to a TK Interest List within the digital enrollment packet. The TK Interest List will be open from April 1, 2023, at 8 a.m. through April 14, 2023, at 5 p.m. *The TK Interest List is only open to students living within PUSD boundaries.
Please note: TK placement is NOT guaranteed. Students will be seated on a space-available basis according to the TK Interest List.

By the 2025-26 school year, PUSD will provide optional TK enrollment to all eligible 4 year olds within the PUSD district. We are currently in the third year of a phased-in process.
