Volunteer Information
Become a School Volunteer: Easy Steps to Get Started!
Volunteers are an important and integral part of our school community. Your school may reach out with a specific need or you may contact them to be of service in a variety of ways. To ensure a safe and organized environment for everyone, we've streamlined the registration process. Here are the two volunteer categories:
- Level 1 – This is the most common type of volunteer. Level I volunteers are allowed to work with students under the supervision of staff. Level I volunteers are not allowed to be left alone with students.
- Level 2 – For volunteers who will work in isolation with students, e.g., Safety Patrol Coordinator, Robotics Coaches, Volunteer Band Instructors. Level II volunteers will have unsupervised contact with students. Please note that since this allows for “significant unsupervised contact with students” there are additional requirements that need to be completed.
Level 1 Volunteer (Grades K–12)
Registering to volunteer is easier than ever with our new online system! This is the process for most classroom and school-site volunteers:
- Complete the Online Application: You will now submit your volunteer application through our secure online system.
- Submit Digital Documents: As part of the application, you'll be able to quickly upload required documents, such as your TB Clearance Certificate, and digitally sign the Code of Conduct and Code of Confidentiality forms.
- Automatic Background Check: The system will automatically perform a Megan’s Law check when you submit your application.
- Staff Review: Our staff will review the results and submitted application, and ensure all your documents are complete and accurate. You will be notified once you are cleared to volunteer.
Level 2 Volunteer (Grades K–12)
Level 2 Volunteers should complete the Level 1 process. Then obtain and complete a Level 2 authorization form from the school site.
The form must be signed by the school site and then brought to the District Office.
This form will be exchanged for an application and Livescan Fingerprinting Form. Please be prepared to show a picture ID when you pick up the form.
Livescan runs fingerprints through databases of the California Department of Justice (CA DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). There is a cost for the applicant ($20 cash payment; $22 card payment). This is a mandatory requirement for Level II volunteers.
The school site will notify applicants once they are approved.

Preschool Volunteers
If you plan to volunteer in a preschool classroom, your process remains the same as in previous years. You will continue to use the paper application forms available at the district office. Please contact the Preschool and Before/After School Services department at (858) 521-2800.
Returning Level 2 Volunteers
If you are a returning Level 2 volunteer, you must re-associate with a school site every school year to maintain your status.
- New Application Required: Even as a returning Level 2 volunteer, each year you need to complete the new online Level 1 volunteer application (see K–12 steps above).
- School Re-Association: Once your online application as a Level 1 volunteer is approved, school-site staff will link you to their school for the current year in our management system.
TB Testing |
The law requires that TB clearance (TB skin test or TB Risk Assessment Questionnaire) be completed by a licensed health care provider.
