New Directions is the independent study program in the Poway Unified School District and is connected to each PUSD school. New Directions provides students in grades 6-12 an opportunity to meet middle and high school requirements independently from the regular classroom setting, meeting their academic, emotional and social needs in a caring learning environment.  Flexibility in where and when students learn is the key aspect that differentiates New Directions from other PUSD learning options.

New Directions utlizes the same PUSD adopted curriculum as our other school sites, based upon:

  • PUSD Academic Standards
  • California State Standards
  • California State Frameworks
  • STANFORD-9 standardized test objectives as prescribed by the state of California
Students are assigned a weekly appointment with an instructor who provides personal attention, assesses, monitors and assigns approximately five days of work to be completed independently by the student.

Students currently enrolled in a PUSD school may access independent study by referral from their current school. Students who live in the district but are not currently enrolled in PUSD may contact an independent study program directly.

All prospective New Directions HIGH SCHOOL students and parents are required to view the online presentation prior to enrollment.
