EL Reclassification
What is reclassification?
Once an identified English learner has reached a specific level of English proficiency, the student can be reclassified, or moved out of the English Learner Program.
What are the criteria for reclassifying an English learner?
The four criteria for reclassification, as required by the State of California (Ed. Code 313), are:
- Results on the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC)
- Performance in basic skills (grade-level English): see below

| All students will need to also meet the remaining two criteria as follows: | ||
| Teacher Evaluation - teachers complete the Student Oral Language Observation Matrix (SOLOM), students must receive an overall average of 3.5 or higher | ||

Parents will be contacted as part of the reclassification process and asked for their input. They will then be asked to sign the final reclassification paperwork.
How will my child’s educational program change, once they have been reclassified out of the English learner program?
After the reclassification process has been completed, the student will no longer be receiving services through the English learner program. They will, however, receive the supports that are available to all students at the school, as needed, and their progress will be monitored for a period of four years following reclassification. Reclassified students no longer take the annual ELPAC test.
