The application process for Substitute Teachers is currently closed. We look forward to welcoming new substitute teachers for the 2026–2027 school year and appreciate your patience as we work through summer updates and preparations for the upcoming school year.

The Substitute Teacher application will reopen on August 1, 2026. At this time, Poway Unified School District is accepting applications from candidates who possess a valid California Multiple Subject, Single Subject, Education Specialist, or Pupil Personnel Services (Counseling) Credential.
 
Please note that applications from 30-Day Emergency Permit holders are not being accepted at this time.

Fingerprinting Information                                                                                                                                                           

Certificate of Clearance Fingerprinting (41-LS)

If you are applying for a California Credential or a 30-Day Emergency Permit for the first time, you must complete the dual fingerprinting process (41-LS) required by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). These fingerprints are also referred to as a Certificate of Clearance.

Poway Unified School District Employment Fingerprinting
DOJ Clearinghouse fingerprinting is not required prior to applying for certificated employment with Poway Unified School District.

Information regarding the district's fingerprinting requirements will be provided to selected candidates upon hire.

Current PUSD Student Teachers?
Interested in substitute teaching? Student teachers may substitute for their cooperating teacher while completing their credential program. Upon program completion, eligible candidates may accept assignments districtwide. Apply to the Substitute Teacher Pool through EdJoin. All required documents listed below must be attached to your application in Edjoin; please do not send your attachments to my email.
  • Resume
  • Three signed letters of recommendation dated within the past three years.
  • Unofficial copies of your transcripts
  • CBEST test results (This is not a required attachment in your application, but if you have your results, please include them.)
  • TB Results/X-ray Results (Risk assessments are not accepted for first-time employees)
TB Certification
Per the Education Code, all employees must provide proof of having been screened and found free of active tuberculosis before beginning employment. Please provide evidence of a negative test within the last 4 years. A copy of the test results is sufficient. Teachers who are Retired STRS members will need to complete the Certification from Contagious or Infectious Disease (I-30).
 
Poway Unified Retired Teachers!
If you are a Retired PUSD certificated teacher interested in returning to substitute teaching after completing the required 180-day separation period, please email Melissa Mann at [email protected]. You will receive fingerprint information and a DocuSign electronic onboarding packet to begin the reactivation process. 

Application Process
The Substitute Desk reviews applications regularly. Applicants selected to continue in the hiring process will be contacted by the Substitute Desk. Due to the high volume of applications received, please do not contact Human Resources regarding the status of your application. Applications are carefully reviewed, and candidates whose education, experience, and training best meet the needs of the District will be contacted for the next steps in the process.
