DNHS Varsity Boys Coaching Staff
Varsity Head Coach - Chris Johnson
Chris grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia, and graduated from Holy Cross Regional Catholic High School. While attending Holy Cross, he was a three-year basketball Varsity player leading his team to a State Championship Title in 2006 and two Final Four appearances. Chris was named to the All-State tournament team (2005), 2nd team All-Conference, 2nd team All VISAA State Team, and six-time News and Advance Athlete of the Week (2005-2006). Chris continued his basketball career at Potomac State College of West Virginia University and was a two-year starter for the Catamounts. After his college tenure, Chris went to play Semi-Professional basketball for a short period of time with the American Basketball Association, Lynchburg Titans. Chris hung up his basketball shoes for the coaching arena where he started as a volunteer assistant at Virginia University of Lynchburg for two seasons before moving over to high school basketball and returning to his alma mater to become a Varsity Assistant for the Boys Basketball program. After five seasons as a Varsity Assistant. Chris moved to San Diego, where he continued coaching high school basketball at Rancho Bernardo High School as the Head JV Boys Basketball Coach. Chris’s hopes to be a Varsity Head Coach came to fruition as he served as the Santana High School Head Varsity Basketball Coach during the 2021-22 season. Chris truly enjoyed his year at Santana High School and was thankful for the opportunity. Coach Johnson comes to us with the experience of coaching in the acclaimed and competitive Poway Unified School District and the familiarization of our school and the previous players at all levels of our basketball program. We look forward to the high energy and passionate reputation of Coach Johnson and his competitiveness that brings out the best in our student athletes
Varsity Assistant Coach - Matt Clark
Coach Matt Clark is entering his first year as Varsity Assistant Coach at DNHS. He has also coached at at the Freshman level in ’09-’10 and ’15-’18 and JV level in '18 - '22. Additionally, he has coached program since it began in 2009 covering grades 3-8. Outside of the Del Norte community Coach Clark worked at the Jim Brogan Academy where he specialized in being a shooting coach and personalized instructor from 2007-20015. He played for the Bronco Ball Club Team during his 6

th grade years and kept playing in rec leagues through high school. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with friends and family at local sporting events and BBQs. Coach Clark has enjoyed every moment of his time coaching at all levels and looks forward to another great year.
Junior Varsity Head Coach - Perry Young
Coach Perry Young joined the DNHS Men’s Basketball program as a JV assistant coach in 2019. After his first year, Perry became the Freshman Head Coach from 2020 - 2022. Perry now assumes the position as Head JV Coach for the 2022-23 season. Before becoming a coach, Young successfully competed at the High School and Collegiate levels; winning the 1999 Louisiana 5A State Championship at New Orleans' St. Augustine High and as an award-winning student-athlete at Denison University from 2001 to 2003. He helped lead the Big Red to their best conference finish in several years and was named a member of the NCAC All-Conference Team. Later graduating with a Major in History and Economics. In his career, Perry serves as a Senior Sales Executive at the Beer Home Team promoting and selling the great Community that DNHS serves. Young and his wife of seven years, Julie, currently reside in Rancho Bernardo.
