English Language Development (ELD)
What is English Language Development (ELD)?
California English Language Development (ELD) is the time and instruction schools provide to help English learners build their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. The ELD Standards guide teachers in showing students how English works—how to understand and use words, grammar, and academic language—so they can succeed in all of their classes. ELD is not separate from learning school subjects; instead, it gives students the tools and practice they need to participate fully in math, science, history, and English.
The state’s ELD standards All identified English learners must receive daily level-appropriate ELD from a certificated teacher until they are reclassified out of the English learner program.
