After School

ASES is an extension of the school day and offers literacy and academic enrichment components. Studies show that participation in the ASES Program increases students’ attachment to their schools, improves academics, and provides a safe environment for students.

Enrollment Prioritization Criteria

Students currently enrolled in ASES can continue their enrollment until they withdraw or are promoted. New students applying to the program will be prioritized for enrollment based on the following focus criteria:

Unduplicated Pupil (UPP): Foster, McKinney-Vento (Homeless), Socioeconomically Disadvantaged, or English Language Learner

Additional District Priority Criteria include:
    • Students who attend daily
    • PUSD Employee
    • Siblings of Enrolled Students
    • Families with one parent/guardian currently on military deployment (a copy of orders may be required upon request)
    • Single-parent household
    • Dual parent working family (both parents working at least 40 hours a week)
    • Was on the waitlist for the previous school year
    • Families requiring full-time, five-day-a-week care will be considered a higher need than those requesting part-time care

Please note: These are focus priorities and are all weighted differently in our application management system.

All homeless and foster youth will receive the highest priority for enrollment. Students that meet multiple criteria will be ranked higher in priority, accordingly.

Purpose and Objectives

The After School Education and Safety (ASES) Program is designed to provide literacy, academic enrichment, and safe constructive alternatives for students.

Program Elements

The ASES program is aligned with the regular school day. A safe physical and emotional environment and opportunities for relationship-building are provided. The following two elements are incorporated in the program’s academic support and enrichment activities:

  1. An educational and literacy element provides homework assistance and academic support to help students meet state standards in reading/language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. A broad range of activities are based on students’ needs and interests.
  2. An education enrichment element offers a variety of additional programs and activities that reinforce and compliment the school’s academic program. This includes positive youth development strategies and prevention activities that may utilize visual and performing arts, community service-learning, recreation and physical activity, health/nutritional promotion, career awareness and work preparation activities based on student needs and interests.

Program Structure

ASES activities, based on above program elements, are organized on a four to six-week rotation and are posted on an activities calendar. Students select their activities from the daily schedule.  Academic support is provided for all students and activities reflect students’ interests in sports, recreation, technology, arts and crafts, gardening, food and nutrition, and other areas. The daily schedule includes a snack based on state nutritional guidelines.

Intersession and Summer Program

ASES will be running an Intersession and Summer program at Oak Valley Middle School.
