Job Opportunities at the PUSD Pools
Can you swim 300 yards and tread water? Are you looking for a year-round or summer job where you can help others? You could have what it takes to be a PUSD lifeguard. Lifeguard training will be provided to applicants who successfully complete the interview process and a water skills test. Upon successful completion of the Lifeguard Training course, applicants will join the PUSD Aquatics Team.
The Poway Unified School District will have job openings for the following positions:
Student Lifeguard: $ 16.54 per hour
Lifeguard/Swim Instructor: $ 16.96 - $20.66 per hour
Hiring takes place in the months of April - June each year. PUSD's Summer Swim Programs will run will run between June 10th and August 15th, 2024.

*If you are a graduating senior, you must become a Water Safety Instructor to continue working as a PUSD Lifeguard. You will no longer be a Student Lifeguard.

Welcome to the Water Safety Instructor certification program! Water Safety Instructor course will train and certify participants to be a swimming and water safety instructor, valid for 2 years. We teach a blended learning course format which includes online education, classroom and in-water components. American Red Cross requires all Water Safety Instructor candidates to complete the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Online Course prior to the first class date. Participants must be at least 16 years old at the time of the course.
Course Length
The Water Safety Instructor Course is offered in a blended learning format that includes:
• The SIM Learning Blended Learning version of this course is designed to be taught in approximately:
o Online time: 6 hours, 45 minutes (includes a robust online learning experience)
o Facility time: 23 hours, 30 minutes (including the Precourse Session)
PREREQUISITES
American Red Cross requires participants to successfully complete the following prerequisites, to receive certification. Refunds will not be issued to participants who do not successfully complete all course prerequisites and course completion requirements, according to the American Red Cross standards. Please make sure you can complete the following course prerequisites and course completion requirements before you attend class. Thank You!
- Participants must be at least 16 years old on the last class date
- Participants must complete the American Red Cross 8 Hours Online Course prior to the first-class date
- Participants must be proficient and able to swim 25 yards of the following strokes: front crawl (freestyle), back crawl (backstroke), breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and 15 yards butterfly. There is no time limit.
- Participants must float on their back for 1 minute in deep water
- Participants must tread water for 1 minute
- The American Red Cross also requires the following for successful course completion: participants must attend all scheduled dates and times, demonstrate proficient skills and pass a written exam with a score of at least 80 percent.

- Rash guard or wetsuit (optional)

LIFEGUARD TRAINING v. 2024
Welcome to the Lifeguard Training certification program! Lifeguard Training will be offered in a blended learning course, with online and classroom components. American Red Cross (ARC) requires all Lifeguard participants to complete the ARC Lifeguard Online Course prior to the first-class date.
PREREQUISITES
American Red Cross requires participants to successfully complete the following prerequisites, to receive certification. Refunds will not be issued to participants who do not successfully complete all course prerequisites and course completion requirements, according to the American Red Cross standards. Please make sure you can complete the following course prerequisites and course completion requirements before you attend class. Thank You!
1. Participants must be at least 15 years old on the last class date.
2. Participants must complete the American Red Cross 8 hour on-line Course prior to the first-class date.
3. Participants must complete the following sequence:
- Jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 150 yards.
- After swimming 150 yards, maintain position at the surface of the water without support for 2 minutes by treading.
- After maintaining position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes, swim 50 more yards.
- While swimming, you must swim continuously, keeping your face in the water and demonstrating good breath control.
- You may use the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.
- Swim goggles are allowed.
Participants:
- While treading, can only use your legs.
- Place your hands under your armpits.
- Your head must remain above the surface of the water.
4. Timed Drill (1 minute, 40 sec): Participants must swim 20 yards, dive down and retrieve a 10-pound weight from 7-feet deep, then swim back another 20 yards with the 10-pound weight in their hands using their legs only. Participants must keep two hands on the weight and their face must remain at or near the surface. Once the participant reaches the pool wall, they must place the weight on the pool deck and climb out of the pool with no assistance. According to American Red Cross requirements, participants may not wear goggles for this drill.
5. The American Red Cross also requires the following for successful course completion: participants must attend all scheduled dates and times, demonstrate proficient skills and pass a written exam with a score of at least 80 percent.

Lifeguard Training Recertification Course for PUSD Lifeguards
An abbreviated Lifeguarding course designed to review course information and allows practice of skills and knowledge before testing. Current certification in Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED is required to participate in the review course. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED which is valid for 2 years.

SAFETY TRAINING for SWIM COACHES
Welcome to the Safety Training for Swim Coaches certification program! STFSC will be offered in a blended learning course, with online and classroom components. American Red Cross (ARC) requires all participants to complete the ARC STFSC Online Course prior to the first-class date.
The Safety Training for Swim Coaches course teach those involved in competitive swimming, including coaches, officials, athletic trainers and aquatic exercise trainers, how to help maintain a safe and comfortable environment for swimmers, prevent accidents and emergencies, and respond to swimmers with illnesses or injuries in water or on land.
