American Red Cross Classes
Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and First Aid for Public Safety Personnel
This American Red Cross program prepares lifeguards to respond with speed and confidence during emergencies, both in and out of the water.
Training includes water rescue skills, surveillance and recognition, first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies, CPR, and AED use. The course provides the training and certification required by Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations.
Course Prerequisites
To receive certification, participants must successfully complete all American Red Cross prerequisites and requirements. Refunds are not issued to participants who do not meet these standards. Please review all requirements before attending class.
- Attend all scheduled class dates and times
- Demonstrate proficient skills
- Pass a written exam with a score of at least 80 percent
- Be at least 15 years old on the last class date
- Complete the American Red Cross 8-hour online course before the first class date
Swimming and Water Skill Requirements
Prerequisite 1: Swim–Tread–Swim Sequence
Participants must complete the following sequence without stopping:
- Jump into the water, fully submerge, and resurface
- Swim 150 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both (no back or side swimming; goggles allowed)
- Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only
- Swim 50 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both
Prerequisite 2: Timed Event (1 minute, 40 seconds)
- Start in the water and swim 20 yards
- Dive to retrieve a 10-pound weight from 7–10 feet deep
- Swim 20 yards back to the starting point holding the weight with both hands
- Keep face at or near the surface and use legs only
- Place the weight on the pool deck and exit the pool without assistance
- Goggles are not allowed for this drill
Classes Offered
- New Certification: For individuals who need a new certification or whose certification has been expired for more than 30 days
- Recertification: For individuals renewing a certification that is not more than 30 days past the expiration date
- Title 22 Training Only: For lifeguards who did not originally complete Title 22 training with their lifeguard certification
