Poway Unified Announces Its PUSD Classified Employees of the Year 

Sarah Cockrell, Rick Daynes, and Laura Upson Receive School District Honors 
 

The Poway Unified School District (PUSD) is proud to announce that Sarah Cockrell, Executive Assistant, Career Technical, Adult, and Alternative Education; Rick Daynes, School Bus Driver, PUSD Transportation Department; and Laura Upson, Youth in Transition (YIT) Education Program Specialist, Learning Support Services have all been chosen as the PUSD Classified Employees of the Year for 2025. Sarah's application will also be forwarded to San Diego County Office of Education for consideration for county-level honors.

The selection of the District Classified Employees of the Year is based on job performance, dedication to the community, and contributions to PUSD. A committee comprised of District and school site representatives are responsible for the selection.

Sarah Cockrell

With nearly a decade of service at PUSD, Sarah Cockrell has been a cornerstone of support for both staff and students. As an Executive Assistant, she has transformed efficiency and collaboration within the Career Technical, Adult, and Alternative Education department.

 

Sarah is widely respected for her exceptional organizational skills, initiative, and problem-solving abilities. Whether leading department-wide meetings, training new employees, or developing systems for efficiency, she consistently goes beyond expectations. She is highly sought after for her expertise in multiple software platforms, helping colleagues streamline their work and improve productivity.

 

Her commitment extends beyond the office—Sarah is deeply involved in her community and district initiatives. She serves as a mentor for new classified employees through PSEA’s Professional Partner Program, a secretary to the board of directors for the Poway Unified School District Foundation, a Domestic Violence Hotline Responder for the Center for Community Solutions, and a leader in single mothers’ support groups in her community.

 

Her leadership is evident not only in her work performance but also in her ability to create a positive and supportive work environment. She is known for her collaborative spirit, strong communication skills, and ability to anticipate challenges before they arise, making her a trusted leader in the district.

 

Rick Daynes, School Bus Driver, PUSD Transportation DepartmentRick Daynes

For over a year, Rick Daynes has been more than just a bus driver—he has been a mentor, role model, and positive influence for students in Poway Unified’s Transportation Department. His friendly demeanor, reliability, and ability to build relationships with students and staff make him a standout member of the district’s classified staff. Rick ensures that every student who steps onto his bus feels safe and valued. He takes the time to learn about his riders and their families. His ability to connect with students of all ages fosters trust and respect, helping set a supportive tone for their school day.

 

Beyond his daily duties, Rick goes above and beyond to support the PUSD community. As an accomplished author and motivational speaker, Rick shares his personal experiences as the father of children with disabilities. Whether stepping in to cover extra duties, ensuring that students with special needs receive extra care, or simply offering words of encouragement to those who need it, Rick embodies excellence in student transportation.

Rick’s impact extends far beyond his bus route. His positive influence on students and his deep commitment to their well-being make him a valued part of PUSD’s student support system, proving that classified employees play an essential role in shaping the student experience.

Laura Upson, Youth in Transition (YIT) Education Program Specialist, Learning Support Services

Laura UpsonA tireless advocate for PUSD’s most vulnerable students, Laura Upson has dedicated her career to supporting students experiencing homelessness through the Youth in Transition (YIT) program. She currently coordinates support for over 300 students across multiple school sites, ensuring they receive essential resources such as transportation, academic support, and community services.

Laura’s impact reaches far beyond school walls. She has played a critical role in building partnerships with local organizations to support students, organizing district-wide Grab-and-Go events for YIT families, and representing PUSD at local, state, and national education conferences. She also has been outstanding in raising awareness about student homelessness through social media and community outreach, including managing the @pusdcares Instagram account. 

 

Laura's leadership and passion for service have earned her widespread recognition.  In 2024, she was honored as the Grand Marshal of the Poway Rotary Parade for her advocacy and support for students experiencing homelessness. Her dedication is evident in everything she does, whether supporting school staff in identifying students in need, presenting at professional learning sessions, or working after hours to ensure families receive urgent assistance.  Her compassion, leadership, and deep commitment to her work make a lasting impact on students, families, and the entire PUSD community.
