CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS Your child will receive a phone call and you will receive an email from your child’s teacher on August 17th by 4 pm. This message will contain your child’s classroom number and teacher name.
ABSENCE ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL Please call the school at 858-674-4707 to account for your child’s absence. If this is a planned absence, let the office know in advance. An unconfirmed absence on the first day of school may result in the District dropping your student from attendance at Highland Ranch.
ATTENDANCE Regular attendance is critical in ensuring student success in school. Please call the Attendance Line at 858-485-4876 when your child is absent. If the school is not notified regarding an absence by 9:00 a.m., our automated system will call you for verification. Unverified absences are considered truant.
BEFORE-SCHOOL SUPERVISION Our campus opens at 7:30 a.m. Students in grades 1st-5th should report to the playground. Kindergarten students should report to the lunch area. Teacher supervision is provided from 7:30 until the bell rings. At this time students in grade 1st-5th line up in their designated area. Their teacher will pick them up from this spot. Kindergarten students remain in the lunch area and their teachers will pick them up from the lunch area.
We respectfully request that parents do not accompany students to the classrooms. An important part of your child’s learning is to gain confidence in themselves and independence. School provides a safe environment to develop these skills. Should you have concerns regarding your child walking to their classroom with their peers please contact the office to discuss your concerns.
CLOSED CAMPUS Highland Ranch is a closed campus. Once children arrive, they may not leave unless a parent or other authorized person comes to the office to sign a release. To insure the safety of our children, you may be required to show I.D. when you pick up your student.
SCHOOL LUNCH The price for lunch is $2.50. Please prepay for lunch whenever possible. Checks should be made out to PUSD Food Service or you can pay on-line at www.MyLunchMoney.com If a student forgets to bring lunch or lunch money he or she will be asked to call home. The school will not lend money to students for lunch.
FREE OR REDUCED-PRICE LUNCH If you qualified for free or reduced lunch in 2011-12, then you will receive free or reduced lunch until September 28 only. You must complete a new application every school year (available after July 23, 2012) on-line.
MEDICATION AT SCHOOL If your child requires medication to be administered at school a “Physician’s Recommendation for Medication” form must be completed by your physician, and returned to school. NO MEDICATION WILL BE GIVEN AT SCHOOL WITHOUT THIS FORM (http://www.powayusd.com/Depts/LSS/Health/PDF2010/H-26AuthorizationforMedication.pdf). An adult must bring the medication to the school office. Children may not have medication in their possession. This includes aspirin, inhalers, and cough drops.
BICYCLE RIDING Riding a bicycle is limited to children in grades 3, 4, and 5. Each child must wear a helmet and provide a lock for his or her bike. Students riding a bike to school must have a permission slip on file in the office. Skateboards, roller shoes, and rollerblades are not allowed on campus.
PARKING LOT Traffic and parking at HRES can be frustrating. Planning and patience can alleviate some of the frustration. Also, please remember that our children learn much more from what we do than what we say. Our campus is open at 7:30 and supervision is provided for students at this time. Traffic becomes most problematic from approximately 7:35-7:50. Dropping your child off a bit earlier than this time may reduce the amount of traffic you will have to deal with. Students may be dropped off at the “turn around” in the parking lot off Eastborne Rd. There is adult supervision there from 7:30-7:43. Please pull up as far as possible and instruct your child to exit the car on the side closest to the sidewalk as soon as possible. Waiting until this time to give your child lunch money, get items from the trunk or give your child last minute instructions can cause traffic delays. Please be considerate of the families in cars behind you and park in a designated spot if you require more time with your child.
PLEASE do access the front driveway from 7:45-8:00 and 1:45-2:00 unless you have a current parking pass. During this 15 minutes before and after school we have buses unloading and loading our special needs students. For the safety of our students it is very important that the driveway is kept clear during this time. We ask that you respect and observe this policy whether or not the principal is standing in the driveway. By only respecting this request when someone is present you are modeling to your child it is only necessary to follow rules when someone is watching. Should you have “special circumstances” (such as a student with an injury) please see the office for a parking pass. This will give you access to the driveway during all times.
VOLUNTEERING AT HIGHLAND RANCH For the safety of our students we require all volunteers, parents driving on field trips and adults attending classroom parties to complete the requirements of our volunteer process. This includes
1) completion of the Megan’s Law form (click here)
2) Proof of a current TB test
3) Submission of a signed Volunteer Code of Conduct
4) Attendance at the Volunteer Orientation
The Volunteer Orientations are held at the Back to School Night and every month prior to the Foundation meeting. Please check the HRES calendar for these dates and times.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT This is an opportunity for parents to meet their child’s teacher and learn general information about your child’s classroom expectations, homework policies and curriculum. Please keep in mind time does not permit “one on one” time with your child’s teacher at this time. Back to School Night is Thursday, August 23rd. This is an ‘adults only’ evening. SAVE THE DATE and please check the times for your child’s grade level time slot!
We are privileged for the opportunity to assist in your child’s education. Children are our greatest natural resource. Please know that we take our responsibility to nourish, protect, and develop your children to their fullest potential very seriously. We look forward to working with you to make 2012-13 a wonderful year for your child. Remember, when school and home work together it can only benefit your child.
