PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

April 14, 2014

Greetings Explorer Families,

I hope all of you enjoyed spring break last week. It was a great week to relax and spend some time with friends and family. This time is always so welcomed before we move into the last nine weeks of the school year. Indeed, it is amazing how quickly the time is going.

Parents, thanks so much for supporting your child’s reading as each student strives to meet or exceed their individual Accelerated Reading goal. We are at the beginning of week four of the seven week challenge. At Del Sur our goal is that every child meets or exceeds their individual goal.

Today our third grade students began the pilot testing of the new SBAC computerized assessment.  Parents, thanks for supporting this pilot program so we can help state officials refine the testing items for the future. Students in grades three to five will be testing in English Language Arts and mathematics. They also will be provided with a performance assessment which tests student’s ability to apply their knowledge in unique academic exercises. Testing will continue during the next four and one-half weeks all the way to May 14th.

On behalf of our PTA and Foundation, I invite everyone to our next general association meeting which will be held Thursday, April 24th beginning at 6:00 pm.  At the meeting, our new slate of officers for the PTA Executive Board for the 2014-2015 school year will be presented and voted upon. Some of our Foundation board members will present the state of our Foundation and some preliminary projections of  programs this organization will fund next year. Finally, I will hold a short talk concerning our strategic vision for our school for the next school year.

PTA DINE OUT EVENT at RUBIOS - Carmel Mountain Ranch!! -  Mark your calendars for April 23rd. Rubios will donate 20% of your food and beverage orders from 2pm to close.  Flyer is attached and must be presented on 4/23/14 for the donation.  Come out to support your school and enjoy a night of friends and family!

April Update for H2O for Life

We are so thankful, Del Sur families, for the generous donations you have made to the organization H2O for Life.  And of course, Lusigetti Primary School in Kenya is so grateful to all of us.  Originally our goal was $1,000 towards this global project, but currently we have donated $3400 to this endeavor.  Wow!  We are confident that we will be able to surpass our new goal of $4,000 by the end of our school year so that we will be able to fully fund their new rain catchment tank and latrines.

Please continue to send in your change, and collect your water bottles.  This is the final push to reach our goal of $4,000. This is all so exciting! We have only $600 to raise. If each child brought in a dollar in change, we would achieve our goal! We are making a difference in the lives of others, Del Sur Explorers. :) Because of us, hundreds of students in Kenya will enjoy the benefits of water, sanitation, and hygiene education.

You may also donate directly online:  http://www.h2oforlifeschools.org/index.php/get-involved/search/item/382-del-sur-elementary  Thank you for all your support, Del Sur!

NEW BOX TOPS AND LABELS CONTEST

Our final contest of the year is underway, as we "Race to the Finish."   To put a competitive spin on the last contest, classes will be competing against their own teammates. The class from each team that turns in the most Box Tops and Labels will each win a $25 gift card for their end-of year projects or parties.  Example:  Classes in the 5th grade team are competing against each other, and one class from the 5th team will win. We have 8 teams, so we will have 8 winners!

You will find the new collection sheet attached above.  All sheets must be turned in by Wed., May 21st, with winners announced on Fri., May 23rd. Thank you for all of your support this year for the contests, and good luck to all!

REMINDER:  Expired Box Tops and Labels for Education without the UPC code do not count! And, please, NO staples.

TK Program for 2014-2015 School Year

  • For the 2014-2015 School year, all students turning 5 from September 2 through December 2 will automatically be placed in TK.  There is not a waiting list or anything special they need to do.  They just need to enroll in May.
  • Students turning 5 from June 1 through September 1 can get on a waiting list to be placed in a TK program. Enrollment numbers at each site will determine how many wait list students can be placed at any given school.  Students will be selected from the waiting list in the order that they signed up.
  • While not guaranteed, we anticipate a TK program at every elementary site next year.  Actual enrollment numbers will determine if this happens.

See you on campus,
Doug Johnson
