Principal’s Message

February 1, 2016

Greetings Del Sur Explorers!

During the month of February, all of our second through fifth grade students will be taking the MAPs test. MAPs is a nationally normed assessment that stands for “Measures of Academic Progress”. It is a three part test covering reading, language usage, and math. Currently, we are measuring the amount of student growth in the aforementioned academic areas from the beginning of the year to the middle of the year. Many students have set goals around achieving a certain score on this assessment. Teachers will be sharing these scores with you in the next couple of weeks.

This week I will have the opportunity to attend our district’s recognition dinner. This is a time once a year that our district honors our teachers of the year, classified employees of the year, and our volunteers of the year as selected from the previous school year. From our school Hilary Cuevas-Balanon was recognized as our teacher of the year. Rod Valdez, our lead custodian, was honored as our classified employee of the year; and Esther Beentjes was saluted as our volunteer of the year. These individuals truly represent the high quality of teachers, classified staff, and volunteers that we are fortunate to have at Del Sur.

If you have time, please join us for our Friday Flag assembly beginning at 8:30 am on the blacktop on February 5th. Following Friday Flag, I will conduct another Principal’s Coffee on the stage of the MPR. Please join me as we discuss programs that support the social emotional needs of our students. Accompanying me at the coffee will be our counselor Ms. Carriero and our Student Support Services Assistant Mrs. Principe. We will be discussing parenting with “Love and Logic”, our “Second Step” Program, and our utilization of the notion of the “Growth Mindset” with our students. If there are any other topics of interest, please let me know.

Explorer Student Spotlight
CALLING ALL NOMINATIONS! Do you have or know of a Del Sur Elementary student who has done something INSPIRATIONAL lately? If so, we want to know about it! He or she may be in our next Explorer Student Spotlight! Don't be shy or too humble : ) Your nominee doesn't need to belong to the Peace Corp, speak 5 languages or have single-handedly saved the Black Rhino from extinction… although all noble endeavors, A VERY SIMPLE GOOD OR NOBLE DEED IS ENOUGH! The Explorer Student Spotlight is a single student or small group who is nominated by a member of the DSE staff, a teacher, a parent, or a fellow student, for being inspirational for one reason or another. A featured "student spotlightee" is highlighted once or twice a month with a photo and their short inspirational story in media both on campus and on DSE related social media. An inspirational story can be driven by, but is not limited to, one of the following:

CHARACTER

- good deeds / goodwill / random acts of kindness
- being a team player
- being a role model, "buddy" to younger student
- volunteer efforts
- being a good friend
- exhibiting patience or compassion
- judicious or leader-like actions
- overcoming hardship / challenge / odds
- active support of the student body
- expression of words of wisdom / reflection / introspection

ACADEMICS
- innovative & design thinking / cool inventions / new ideas
- taking initiative / exhibiting project leadership skills
- academic progress
- brainstorming / problem solving
- work in creative writing / math / coding / history / science etc.

MISC
- all around feel-good story
- extracurricular accomplishments
- healthy lifestyle practices / philosophies
- thoughts / reflections about DSE
This is a great way to highlight and support our amazing school and its student body, as well as help strengthen the general sense of connectedness in our community and between our children. The Explorer Student Spotlight Program will enable students themselves to see and be inspired by what their peers are up to, what they are interested in, what makes them unique... potentially creating a respect and tolerance for all shapes, sizes, colors, ages, genders, backgrounds, etc.

Del Sur Foundation

Please mark your calendars! Del Sur Educational Foundation’s (DSEF) largest fundraiser of the year is planned for Saturday, April 2, 2016. This year’s Night at the Ranch is themed “Putting on the Ritz”.

DSEF board members have been hard at work to make this year’s extravaganza better than ever! In order for the event to be a success, we need your help! We are putting together committees and looking for volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please email Krissy Rattray at kristina.rattray@delsurfoundation.org. We also have sponsorship opportunities available and we welcome donations for our silent and live auctions.

The DSEF was created to provide invaluable educational programs such as remedial and advanced learning groups, music, art, technology, and many other programs not funded by the school district. These programs would otherwise not be included in the school curriculum. Programs provided by the Foundation exist to bridge funding gaps and bring those programs to every child…YOUR child. To ensure continued success of our school, we need the support of EVERY Del Sur Elementary family to keep these programs in place. This year, the Foundation is tasked with raising $72,000, and the funds raised through Night at the Ranch provide a significant amount of the needed funds.
Hope to see you at Night at the Ranch!
