Principal’s Message
October 27, 2014

Greetings Explorer Families!

I would like to thank Mrs. Principe, our Student Services Director, and Ms. Carriero, our school counselor, for planning last week’s Red Ribbon Week focused activities. Our students spent time involved in programs promoting a healthy lifestyle such as exercising and eating a balanced diet as well as making positive choices. We also spent time reemphasizing our Anti-bullying program with our “WITT” program. As with every school, we have a no tolerance of bullying on our site. Ask your child(ren), what “WITT” stands for. You might even have them practice a scenario utilizing the WITT protocol.

In order to keep all students safe, please note that the doors to the Educational Mall are being kept locked until 8:10 am. Only students who have parent permission to attend our two morning literacy support classes are eligible to get into the Educational Mall prior to 8:10 am. Officially, our school does not open with proper supervision until 8:10 am. I do thank our parent community in advance for adhering to this important safety protocol.

Speaking of safety, we are in need of two more Noon Duty Supervisors. If you are interested, please send me an email describing your experience that would relate to being an effective supervisor for our children during the recess time periods.

This Friday we will be celebrating Halloween on our site. We will begin the day with a parade of costumes around our Running Club track. Parents and other family and community members are invited to observe the festivities. Parents, please note the Halloween costume safety guidelines that have been placed in the Explorer Informer during the last few weeks.

Del Sur Halloween Guidelines

Halloween is right around the corner. We will be celebrating Halloween at school on Friday, October 31. Students may wear costumes to school on that day if they would like. However, all costumes must adhere to the following guidelines:

1. Avoid rubber masks. They may be appropriate in the evening, but afternoons in San Diego County are generally above 80 and children swelter in masks. Masks also severely restrict vision. Consider using make-up or face paint instead.
2. Wear shoes or sandals. Safety regulations require students to wear shoes at all times at school.
3. No weapons please. Toy guns, knives, handcuffs, nun chucks, etc. will be taken and returned at the end of the day.
4. Modest costumes. Bathing suits, bikinis, and bare midriffs should be avoided.
5. Display respect for other cultures. Avoid stereotyping or ridiculing other races or cultures.
6. Keep it simple. Six hours in an elaborate costume can be tiring at any age. The child should not require assistance.

 Gate Testing

The purpose of the GATE services in the Poway Unified School District is to identify and motivate highly able students to realize their full potential. Gifted students are higher level thinkers who demonstrate depth, originality, and creativity in their thoughts. GATE students have common characteristics but often unique needs. In order to meet the needs of GATE students all day, classroom teachers differentiate the curriculum as needed. Differentiated instruction is individualized based on what the student is showing in class. Some techniques utilized in the classrooms are cluster grouping, varying the pace of instruction, compacting the curriculum, higher level questioning, and activities that are open ended.
Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) involves services for students whose cognitive needs may require modified classroom curriculum and instruction to accommodate their learning differences and ensure their achievement. Parents may request GATE testing for students in grades 2-7.
