Greetings Explorer Families,

Tomorrow evening our TK and Kindergarten teachers and I will be sharing some information about our TK/K program with parents of our incoming new students in these grade levels for the 2015-2016 school year tomorrow evening beginning at 6:00 pm. If you know parents of these grade levels that will be coming to Del Sur, please let them know about our orientation meeting.

Currently, our third through fifth grade classrooms are participating in this year’s new state computerized testing program called CAASP – California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress/SBAC – Smarter Balanced Assessment System. The CAASP/SBAC program requires all school districts throughout the state to annually use computerized tests to assess the achievement of students in the areas of reading, mathematics, and language arts. Our students will be taking these assessments during the weeks of April 20 to May 29. Students will be testing only seven hours during this time, but since the tests are all on computer software, we will be scheduling different classes in our two computer labs over many weeks. Please see your teacher’s bulletins for specific testing dates for your child’s class. Additionally, all fifth grade students will also take a paper and pencil multiple choice California Standards Science test specifically aligned with their current course of study.

Absenteeism during the test period can create problems for some students. Those who miss testing sessions with their regular class will be given make-up sessions in supervised small group settings. However, most students prefer to take the test along with their classmates.

Del Sur Heritage Night
On Thursday, May 28, 2015, Del Sur will be celebrating our school’s multi-cultural diversity with our first Heritage Night (6:00PM-8:00PM). It will be an exciting event that will showcase the many different countries that represent our students’ heritage. We look forward to your attendance! There will be food, activities, performances, arts and crafts, and lots of fun and learning! Mark your calendars today.
Heritage Poster Project
Your child has a unique opportunity to contribute to our event by participating in a Heritage Poster Project. This optional assignment can be a family project and is a wonderful way to share your cultural background and history with other Del Sur families. Please see the attachments for details. Submissions are due by May 28th. Students will receive a certificate and a ribbon for their participation.

LAST PTA DINE OUT EVENT OF THE YEAR!! - Mark your calendars for WEDNESDAY, MAY 28TH for a Dine-Out at AT PANERA 4S Ranch! This DINE OUT will be from 4pm-8pm. Panera will donate a percentage of your food and beverage orders to the Del Sur Elementary PTA. The flyer is attached. A physical or digital copy must be presented on 5/28/15 for the donation. Come out to support your school and enjoy a night of friends and family!

Box Tops and Labels for Education Contest - NEW INFO!!!
Our 4th contest is now underway -"I Scream, you Scream, we all Scream for Box Tops and Labels For Education!" Each team’s ice cream cone will earn a scoop every 50 points by sending in their Box Tops, Labels for Education, Sunny D, Prang Power, and My Coke Rewards points. This contest will be a TEAM contest, with each teacher of the winning team receiving a $30 gift card. All points must be turned in by Wednesday June 3rd in order to be counted. We will no longer be using collection sheets. Please submit your Box Tops, Labels for Education, Sunny D, Prang Power, and My Coke Rewards points in an envelope or plastic bag. Don't forget to put your teachers name on the outside a well as how many items are in your bag/envelope. REMINDER: Expired Box Tops and Labels for Education without the UPC code do not count!
