Greetings Explorer Families!

Gate Testing

The purpose of the GATE services in the Poway Unified School District is to identify and motivate highly able students to realize their full potential. Gifted students are higher level thinkers who demonstrate depth, originality, and creativity in their thoughts. GATE students have common characteristics but often unique needs. In order to meet the needs of GATE students all day, classroom teachers differentiate the curriculum as needed. Differentiated instruction is individualized based on what the student is showing in class. Some techniques utilized in the classrooms are cluster grouping, varying the pace of instruction, compacting the curriculum, higher level questioning, and activities that are open ended.
Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) involves services for students whose cognitive needs may require modified classroom curriculum and instruction to accommodate their learning differences and ensure their achievement. Parents may request GATE testing for students in grades 2-7.

Running ClubBegins Tuesday, September 16th
Running Club will begin again on Tuesday, September 16th. All students are encouraged to run our track during morning recess. This is a way for all students to get physically fit. When students run this year, they will earn toe tokens that can be affixed to their backpacks. Students will receive a token for each 5 mile increment. Students will receive their token every six weeks. Parents, please remind your students to wear running shoes to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays to participate in Running Club. If you would NOT like your child to participate in Running Club, please send me an email. Of course, this is not a required activity for students; it is a choice.

Parents Needed to Serve on the 2014-2015 School Site Council:
As a school site, we are in need of five parents to serve on our School Site Council. The five parents who have been serving in this role have served for two years, which is the maximum of the time they can serve under state guidelines. This group of parents meet with teachers, staff, and myself to review school goals, help form new school focus goals, review student data, and to help write our annual Single Plan for Student Achievement state document. The School Site Council typically meets once a month right after school. Please let me know if you are interested in serving on our council. You can email me at . Our first meeting will take place in early October.
