Principal’s Message
March 2, 2015

Greetings Explorer Families,

I would like to thank the many parents and students who attended last Thursday’s PTA/Foundation General Association Meeting and my yearly State of the School Address. I always look forward to these meetings as it gives me a chance to share all of the amazing things that are occurring on our campus. I would like to thank the many students who shared their thoughts on our art, music, PE, and our STEAM program. Their representative student voice was a wonderful addition to the conversation. I also so appreciate our parents’ suggestions and comments in helping us refine our vision. One suggestion provided by a couple of parents is to form a parent Science/Technology Advisory Committee. The role of this committee would be to serve in an advisory capacity to help us formulate a focused vision for science and technology on our site. If you are interested in participating in this committee, please email me.

Our Superintendent, Dr. Collins, sent a PUSD Family message last month about four upcoming Community Forums the District is holding over the next several weeks to receive input on developing a vision for “Personalized Learning.” Read this important message by visiting our District website at www.powayusd./depts/Super/messages.shtml. I hope our Del Sur community will be an active part of this process. I will be attending the Community Forum on Wednesday, April 1 at Oak Valley Middle School. I hope you can join me at this Forum and help ensure the voice of Del Sur is part of the conversation. Thank you in advance.

Parents, please note that on Wednesday, March 11th our students will be on a minimum day schedule. They will be dismissed from school at 12:15 pm. This is a day that the teachers and I will be involved in some professional development.

It is quite amazing that this coming Friday will be the last day of the second trimester. On Friday, March 13, students will be carrying home with them their second trimester progress report card. Our students are making tremendous progress and as a school we would like to thank our parents for your support in making sure homework is completed and that our students are reading and practicing their math facts on a nightly basis.

March is a very important academic month. There are no vacation days during the entire month. Please do your very best in making sure that your child is at school on time and ready to learn. It is extremely important. It is the collective home school effort that yields successful students. Thanks for all you do.

On Saturday, March 14th, from 10 am to 4 pm Cal State San Marcos will be hosting a Super Stem Saturday. This is a great opportunity for you and your students to participate and explore over 75 interactive demonstrations and hands-on science activities. This event will include: rocket launches, build-a-robot stations, model displays, scientist chats and animal encounters. The event is FREE and open to the public. For more information please visit www.csusm.edu/superstem

Finish Chelsea’s Run – Saturday, March 7th at Balboa Park
Join team Del Sur Explorers to support Chelsea’s Run. All grades pre-k to 5th are welcome to participate. Our goal is for 100 students to register. Please help us reach our goal.
As a reminder, this is not a school sponsored event. Therefore the school is not responsible for the students at the event. A parent or responsible adult must be present with the student the duration of the Finish Chelsea's Run. There will be over 100,000 people at this race and your child's safety is a priority. We highly encourage that you sign-up and register as a team member, however, understand that your child may want to run with his peers or realistically out-run the adults, in general. Please ensure that you communicate with your child your meeting place after the race.

5th Annual Science Fair – Friday, March 27th
It is Science Fair time once again at Del Sur. Parents, I invite you to involve your student in completing a science fair project. This is an optional project and not a requirement. This year’s fair will take place on Friday, March 27th. The Science Fair projects will be on display for parent viewing in the afternoon from 2:00pm to 4pm. Students may take their projects home on Monday, March 30th.

Art Room News
Thank you so much Del Sur Families for your continued support of the Art program. It is wonderful to see all the volunteers and the many, many items that have been donated.
Del Sur has participated in two different student art contests this year. The first was Youth Art Month. This is a program put on by the San Diego Art Educators Association. Currently, four Del Sur Artists have their artwork on display at the Rose Gallery at Francis Parker School: Daniella Johnson, Grade 4. Stephen Castaneda Grade 3, Mia Dyer, Grade 1 and Eric Liu, Kindergarten. They will be on display at the Rose Gallery until March 22. Daniella and Stephen received Honorable Mention for their artwork and Mia's art received a First Place honor. Because of Mrs. N’s CAEA affiliation, Mia’s work will go on to Whittier College to represent Del Sur at the Southern Area YAM show.
Student work was also submitted to the San Diego Museum of Art’s Young Art: Making Music program. Six Del Sur students will have their work on display at the San Diego Museum of Art beginning Saturday April 11 through Tuesday May 26, 2015: Drew Quanstrom, Grade 1; Isabella Bayus, Grade 1, Eli Naval Grade 5, Chloe Fritz Grade 5, Thomas Grothe Grade 5.
Additionally, thanks to your purchases, comments, and participation, Del Sur is currently ranked #2 in the state for Artsonia! All money generated from Artsonia goes directly back into the art program. Our gallery is at www.Artsonia.com/schools/delsur1
If you need more information about any of these programs or have any questions please contact: Alyssa Navapanich at anavapanich@sbcglobal.net.
