Greetings Explorer Families!
This week we kicked off our annual Red Ribbon Week. This is a Bully Free and Drug Free week where we focus our students’ attention on this year’s theme – Del Sur Explorers Launching Healthy Choices….
Red Ribbon Week is a week that we emphasize through various activities being a student of strong character and the notion of making positive healthy choices each and every day. The following is a list of the activities planned for the week. We encourage students to wear their Red Ribbon each day this week.
Plan on join us for Friday Flag on the 24th of this week. We will be highlighting the events of week and performing a special song that directly relates to theme of Red Ribbon Week. Following Friday Flag, I will be hosting another Principal’s Coffee in the MPR. Come and join me as we discuss current school issues. In particular, I will be discussing Common Core mathematics and our integration of technological resources in our educational delivery programs on our site. Starbucks Coffee will be provided. I hope to see many of you there.

Del Sur Halloween Guidelines
Halloween is right around the corner. We will be celebrating Halloween at school on Friday, October 31. Students may wear costumes to school on that day if they would like. However, all costumes must adhere to the following guidelines:
1. Avoid rubber masks. They may be appropriate in the evening, but afternoons in San Diego County are generally above 80 and children swelter in masks. Masks also severely restrict vision. Consider using make-up or face paint instead.
2. Wear shoes or sandals. Safety regulations require students to wear shoes at all times at school.
3. No weapons please. Toy guns, knives, handcuffs, nun chucks, etc. will be taken and returned at the end of the day.
4. Modest costumes. Bathing suits, bikinis, and bare midriffs should be avoided.
5. Display respect for other cultures. Avoid stereotyping or ridiculing other races or cultures.
6. Keep it simple. Six hours in an elaborate costume can be tiring at any age. The child should not require assistance.
Uncorked was a wonderful night thank you for those that attended and to the Staff that poured for our event. If you liked a particular wine and remember the bag #, go to our website, delsurfoundation.org and find out what it was.
Saturday November 15th is our next event. Dealin' it for Del Sur. This is a fun evening of playing cards, socializing and wining fabulous prices all for your kids. Check in begins at 5, cards fly at 6 and prizes will be awarded by 9:30. What could be more fun than spending a night at the Del Sur Ranch house having fun a while raising money for your kids. Sign up online at delsurfoundation.org

The purpose of the GATE services in
the Poway Unified School District is to identify and motivate highly able
students to realize their full potential. Gifted students are higher level
thinkers who demonstrate depth, originality, and creativity in their
thoughts. GATE students have common characteristics but often unique needs.
In order to meet the needs of GATE students all day, classroom teachers
differentiate the curriculum as needed. Differentiated instruction is
individualized based on what the student is showing in class. Some
techniques utilized in the classrooms are cluster grouping, varying the pace
of instruction, compacting the curriculum, higher level questioning, and
activities that are open ended.
Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) involves services for students whose cognitive needs may require modified classroom curriculum and instruction to accommodate their learning differences and ensure their achievement. Parents may request GATE testing for students in grades 2-7.
