Principal’s Message
November 17, 2014

Greetings Explorer Families!

As all of you know, this week is conference week at Del Sur. For the rest of this week, students will be dismissed at 1:10 pm. Parents, thank you for meeting with your child’s teacher.  This dialogue is vitally important in enhancing a tight home school relationship focused on supporting the academic and social emotional needs of each of our students.

Today is Del Sur Elementary School Day in the city of San Diego. If you have time, please join us at City Hall at 6:00 pm where individuals from our school community will receive a proclamation honoring the school for its National Blue Ribbon Award at this evening’s Board Meeting.  The proclamations are done at the beginning of the Council meeting. Councilman Kersey will say a few words and then I will have an opportunity to address the City Council.

When: Monday, November 17 at 6 p.m. (Meet on 12th floor at 5:45 p.m.)

Where: City Hall 12th floor Council Chambers 202 C Street San Diego 92101

Parking: Park at the San Diego Concourse Evan V. Jones Parkade, entrance is located at 2nd Ave. and A Street. We can validate parking but we recommend carpooling.

I wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving vacation next week. Make some memories with your family and friends.  Spend time discussing with your children all the things that they are thankful for in our lives. Indeed, we have much to be thankful for especially our precious children that we are entrusted to care for each day. We will resume our normal school schedule and times on Monday, December 1st.

Parents and students, please check the Lost and Found cart for any items that may be yours.  All items left on the cart will be removed after school on November 21 and donated to charity.

PTA Family Portraits

It is time for our annual PTA Family Portraits with Spark Photography. It's a Win-Win...You get a beautiful family portrait (possibly for that Holiday Greeting card this year) and Spark Photography will donate a portion of all portrait sales back to Del Sur! The pricing is very competitive too! The deadline is this Friday, November 21st.

NEEDED: YEARBOOK CO-CHAIR & VOLUNTEERS

Our annual yearbook is typically put together by a small team of volunteers. However, this year we have had NO volunteers stepping-up to help. We are in serious need of help as one person cannot do the entire yearbook. Also, our current chairperson is a fifth grade parent who will be leaving us at the end of this school year. So we need someone (or a few people) trained on the systems that were put together to ensure we have a yearbook this year and next year. Here is what we are looking for:

  • A person who is organized and can communicate effectively via email and face-to-face with teachers, staff, volunteers, and yearbook company.
  • A person who is available to coordinate volunteers for various things such as photography, design, yearbook cover voting, end of year sales and so on.
  • A person who can show up at yearbook related events such as sales and voting.
  • It's a plus if this person has the ability to take some great photos and can be on campus during important functions such as Halloween, Red Ribbon Week, 5th Grade Band/Orchestra performances, etc. Of course, coordinating the classroom parent volunteers to upload photos is also good if you can't take photos.
  • It's a plus if this person can do some design work - though not a requirement.

The company we work with, Memory Book, has an amazingly simple online system for creating books. You need not be a designer! If you can click, drag/drop and type...then you can use this yearbook creating system online. The entire yearbook process from the beginning of the year to the end of the year has been systemized. All you need to do is follow the system (or refine/create your own) to be a co-chair or chairperson.

Please consider being on the yearbook committee! It's fun, and comes with perks, like being the first person(s) to see the yearbook, and your kids will absolutely LOVE that you worked on it. We need committed volunteers NOW...otherwise there is a great chance that our yearbook will not be as great this year, and next year we may not have one. Please contact Dena DiSarro (PTA President) romagirls88@hotmail.com or Colleen Connery (Yearbook Chairperson) thecocogal@gmail.com if interested in helping ASAP! THANK YOU!

Box Tops and Labels for Education Contest
Our second contest is now underway -
"Let’s Build a Snowman with Box Tops and Labels For Education!"  Each team’s snowman will earn a piece by sending in their Box Tops, Labels for Education, Sunny D, Prang Power, and My Coke Rewards points.  This contest will be a TEAM contest, with each teacher of the winning team receiving a $30 gift card.  All sheets must be turned in by Wednesday January 7th in order to be counted. A new collection sheet is attached above.  REMINDER:  Expired Box Tops and Labels for Education without the UPC code do not count! And, please, NO staples.

Ralphs Card Linking Contest The PTA is sponsoring a contest to see which class can get the most people to link their Ralphs card to Del Sur Elementary PTA.

All you need to do is bring in the bottom portion of your Ralphs receipt that says, “At your request, Ralphs is donating to Del Sur Elementary PTA”  Make sure to also write your child’s last name somewhere on the receipt so that we can keep track of the submissions.

It's not too late - Please re-link your Ralph's card to Del Sur today! Earning over $12,000 last year, this income is vital to the "extras" your children enjoy, such as guest speakers, special projects, field trip off-sets, etc...

Re-link by:
1) Visiting
http://www.ralphs.com to renew your contribution
(Detailed step-by-step instructions with screen shots can be found on the PTA website
http://delsurpta.org/programs/no-cost-fundraisers/linking-your-ralphs-card-online/
2) Taking the scanbar code from your "Free Fundraiser" flier with you on your next shopping trip, and give to the cashier at checkout.

Are you linked? The bottom of your receipt should say "You have designated to support Del Sur Elementary PTA". If you have issues trying to complete the process, please call Ralph's Customer Assistance at 1-800-660-9003. Thank you!

Gate Testing

The purpose of the GATE services in the Poway Unified School District is to identify and motivate highly able students to realize their full potential. Gifted students are higher level thinkers who demonstrate depth, originality, and creativity in their thoughts. GATE students have common characteristics but often unique needs. In order to meet the needs of GATE students all day, classroom teachers differentiate the curriculum as needed. Differentiated instruction is individualized based on what the student is showing in class. Some techniques utilized in the classrooms are cluster grouping, varying the pace of instruction, compacting the curriculum, higher level questioning, and activities that are open ended.
Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) involves services for students whose cognitive needs may require modified classroom curriculum and instruction to accommodate their learning differences and ensure their achievement. Parents may request GATE testing for students in grades 2-7.
