December 9, 2013
Greetings Explorer Families,
I would like to thank the over 100 parents who attended my
Principal’s Coffee last Wednesday evening. We had a lively discussion concerning
the future of our school in terms of student utilization of technological
devices. I will be sending out a technology survey next week to gain a broader
perspective on this issue. At Del Sur it is our belief that we need additional
technological devices such as iPads in order to better differentiate instruction
and to provide students with timely 21st century educational tools to enhance
their academic studies.
Plan on attending Friday Flag on December 13th beginning at 8:30 am. I will be recognizing some of our outstanding student runners from our Running Club program and will be handing out certificates to our top readers from our recently concluded Principal’s Reading Challenge. To get us in the holiday spirit, Mrs. Peterson will join us in singing three classic holiday songs. It is always so great to have our parents join us at Friday Flag.
Thank you for continuing to support our Book Fair. I hope to see all of you Tuesday morning for Breakfast and Books and Thursday evening for our Holiday Boutique.
Book Fair and Holiday Boutique
Del Sur PTA is sponsoring a book fair through Friday, December 13. In order to accommodate all of our students and their families, We have chosen to be open during all school hours for this time as well as an early morning "Breakfast and Books" on Tuesday, December 10 and an evening "Book Fair and Holiday Boutique" on Thursday, December 12.
This event is fundraising to supplement our library and add books in the
classrooms to support the influx of students and changes in standards
Thank you for your support!
Looking for Vendors!
Del Sur Elementary PTA is currently accepting applications from vendors to participate in our first annual Holiday Shopping Boutique at the book fair. We welcome franchise vendors (we’re accepting only one vendor per franchise) as well as handcrafted artisan goods. If you have unique, fun, interesting, or useful items to sell, we want you! Please see the flyer.
Del Sur Elementary is holding a food drive with the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank! Your wonderful efforts will go a long way to help us feed the hungry in San Diego County this holiday season. This is also a great opportunity to teach our children the importance of giving.
We will be collecting non perishable food items starting December 9th, 2013 and ending December 20th, 2013. Attached is a list of most needed items as well as information about the food bank and its mission.
TK Program for 2014-2015 School Year
• For the 2014-2015 School year, all students turning 5 from September 2 through December 2 will automatically be placed in TK. There is not a waiting list or anything special they need to do. They just need to enroll in May.
• Students turning 5 from June 1 through September 1 can get on a waiting list to be placed in a TK program. Enrollment numbers at each site will determine how many wait list students can be placed at any given school. Students will be selected from the waiting list in the order that they signed up.
• The waiting list will be accessed through the district website and will open on March 10. There will also be a parent information night on Thursday, March 6th at 6:00 p.m. in the Painted Rock Multi-purpose room. Parents only need to attend the information night if they have questions about the TK program. They do not need to attend to get on the waiting list.
• While not guaranteed, we anticipate a TK program at every elementary site next year. Actual enrollment numbers will determine if this happens.

After School Mandarin Update:
Enrollment to start soon as we aim for a late January start date!
We attempted to get a Mandarin program started in October and although we had lots of interest, we didn’t have the minimum numbers as many were already committed to other activities. The program is through All About Mandarin Academy, a local business that serves over a dozen elementary schools in Carmel Valley and Del Sur. If you remain interested or have any questions, please contact parent Chad Givens at firstname.lastname@example.org (415.595.5720).
Art Room Update
Have you recently cleaned out your craft stash or office supply space? Think about donating those items to the art program! Some of the things we love to re-purpose are wallpaper samples, fabric, colorful scrapbook papers, and cereal boxes. Papers that can be used in collage and book-making such as interesting colored paper, origami paper, art paper, tissue paper, magazines, old business cards, etc. We also use beads, colored craft tape, masking tape, rubber bands, chopsticks, old greeting cards, sponges, hole punches, kid scissors, clothespins, scrapbook items, small storage bins, stickers, buttons, shells, plastic bread closures, rubber stamps, stamp pads, stencils and sand paper. There is a collection bin in the lobby for your convenience.
Preschool to Grade 2 families: Need a unique gift for the holidays? Purchase a keepsake with your child's art on it at Artsonia! 20% of all sales go right back into the art program. Items purchased before 12/15 are guaranteed delivery before Christmas. Visit our online gallery at http://www.artsonia.com/schools/delsur1. If you need the log-in information for your child, please email me with your child’s name, teacher's name and grade level. You can help us stay in the top ten rank in CA by joining your child’s fan club, writing positive comments about student artwork or making a purchase.
Thank you so much for your support of the arts at Del Sur,

Del Sur Families:
We will be doing our Season of Giving again this year. Last year we were able to help so many local and Del Sur families and make a difference during such a difficult time of the year. Please send in donations of gift cards (Target, Wal-Mart, Ralphs) or money to Heather Barnard. Happy Holidays and thank you for all your support.

H2O for Life Update --
Wow, Del Sur families! We are so amazed by all the generous giving. You have donated an incredible amount of change and have collected tons of water bottles for our partner school in Kenya. Each of our classrooms took in the change you donated this past weekend, and our total from all these coins was $1027. Incredible! Through your online and check donations, we have now collected a grand total of $2326 for Lusigetti Primary School. We will not stop there. Please continue to collect your water bottles and send in your loose change. We are global citizens, and we will make a difference for the students in Lusigetti!
Please send a bottle of water and make sure to apply sun screen to your children on the days they have PE.
See you on campus,
