March 3, 2014
Greetings Explorer Families,
I hope all of you will join me in congratulating Mrs. Nowak on a special honor. She was selected as Del Sur's teacher of the year. Six years ago, Mrs. Nowak was selected to serve on the Leadership team that was organized to envision the school Del Sur was to become. Since this time, she has passionately continued to help our entire staff to align our practices with this stated vision set many years ago while also teaching our younger kindergarten, first, and second grade students for the past six years. A key highlight that Mrs. Nowak organizes each year is our annual Science Day. On this day she ascertains assemblies and parent speakers to share with our students intriguing scientific information and also provide hands on science activities for all of our students. In fact this coming Friday is our next all grade level Science Day. Beginning Thursday morning and continuing throughout the day on Friday, our students will once again enjoy engaging assemblies and speakers and participate in hands on science activities. This day is always so enlightening for our students. We would like to thank Mrs. Nowak for organizing this day and also being selected as our teacher of the year.
On another note, parents note that this Friday marks the end of the second trimester of school. Students will be carrying home their second trimester report card next Friday, March 14th.
Join Del Sur Elementary School on March 29th from 5-10pm for the Annual Night at
the Ranch Fundraiser
Pull on your cowboy boots and get ready for a boot-kickin’ good time at the annual Night at the Ranch - Wild West Saloon! Del Sur Educational Foundation’s largest fundraiser of the year will be held at The Ranch House in Del Sur on March 29th.
Come as you are, dress in your best western gear, or dress to the nines in cocktail attire…we don’t care as long as you're here! The evening will include casino games, live & silent auctions, food, libations, live entertainment, raffles and more…and while we know this is a lot of fun and games, this is serious fundraising business! All proceeds directly benefit Del Sur Elementary School’s Art, Music, Impact Teacher salaries & programs, software & technology purchases and upgrades! So bring your cash and credit and belly-up to bid on some amazing items to help us pay for the cost of a balanced education for our children (while having a little fun, of course)!!
TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE!! To purchase your tickets, please go to http://delsurfoundation.org/night-at-the-ranch/
The Del Sur Foundation invites business owners/managers to increase visibility in our community through event sponsorship and/or donations for auction items. Please go to our website at www.delsurfoundation.org to get more information and to download our Sponsorship and Donation forms.

We'll be picking up trash around the school and pulling weeds. All members of those groups are encouraged to participate! We also need parent volunteers of both groups to take small groups of students around campus. Please bring gloves, buckets, spades and a little energy and we'll have a cleaned-up campus in no-time. If your child is in ESS and still wants to participate, a permission slip can be sent home for you to sign allowing Mr. Johnson to pull your child from ESS and help, and then returned to ESS at 2:30pm. If you have any questions or want to RSVP, please send an email to Katie at email@example.com with the Garden Club or Colleen at firstname.lastname@example.org with Kids Korps.
H2O for Life February Update --
We are so thankful, Del Sur families, for the generous donations you have made to the organization H2O for Life. And of course, Lusigetti Primary School in Kenya is so grateful to all of us. Originally our goal was $1,000 towards this global project, but currently we have donated $2940 to this endeavor. Wow! We are confident that we will be able to surpass our new goal of $4,000 by the end of our school year so that we will be able to fully fund their new rain catchment tank and latrines.
Please continue to send in your change, and collect your water bottles. We will be adding up another classroom change total in the middle of March. This is all so exciting! We are making a difference in the lives of others, Del Sur Explorers. :) You may also donate directly online: http://www.h2oforlifeschools.org/index.php/get-involved/search/item/382-del-sur-elementary Check out how we may make a difference in our elementary school in Kenya one day: http://vimeo.com/26198365 .
Thank you for all you do!
GATE Test results will be mailed out from Poway Unified School District in the beginning of April.

TK Program for 2014-2015 School Year
• For the 2014-2015 School year, all students turning 5 from September 2 through December 2 will automatically be placed in TK. There is not a waiting list or anything special they need to do. They just need to enroll in May.
• Students turning 5 from June 1 through September 1 can get on a waiting list to be placed in a TK program. Enrollment numbers at each site will determine how many wait list students can be placed at any given school. Students will be selected from the waiting list in the order that they signed up.
• The waiting list will be accessed through the district website and will open on March 10. There will also be a parent information night on Thursday, March 6th at 6:00 p.m. in the Painted Rock Multi-purpose room. Parents only need to attend the information night if they have questions about the TK program. They do not need to attend to get on the waiting list.
• While not guaranteed, we anticipate a TK program at every elementary site next year. Actual enrollment numbers will determine if this happens.
See you on campus,
