All visitors to our campus must check in through the Administration Office at the front of the school.

Please take a few minutes at home to carefully check your child’s health before he/she leaves for school each morning. The following are a few suggestions, which may help to guide you:

~Illness during the night
~Fever is present (100 degrees or greater)
~Complaints of nausea, upset stomach, vomiting, headache, diarrhea prior to leaving for school
~Development of a rash on face and/or body
~Has a severe cold, cough and/or sore throat
~Has inflamed eye(s) with discharge from them

Please Remember: An ill child cannot function properly in the classroom. The spread of illness and disease through class or school can be more easily monitored if sick children remain at home during the acute stage of an illness. If the school health tech detects any of the above, your child will be sent home.

People with influenza-like illness are to remain home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever (100o F [37.8o C]) without the use of fever-reducing medications.

A student’s absence should be reported on the School Absence Hotline by calling: (858) 485-0042 x4202.

Homework can also be requested on this phone message, please indicate when you will be picking it up.

Soar Into Summer Reading Book Swap
Please support Chaparral’s library in our Soar Into Summer Reading book swap. This event is scheduled for Thursday May 28th. Our goal is for every student at Chaparral to bring home 1 or 2 gently-used books that appeal to them. The suggested donation is at least 2 gently-used fiction or non-fiction books that are at the same reading level/grade level as your student(s), but we’ll gladly accept as many K-5 appropriate books as you’d like to donate. We particularly need upper level 4th & 5th grade books. Collection boxes will be in the office, ESS, and the library. Donations will be accepted until May 22nd.

We will also need volunteers for this event. Please contact me in the library if you are interested in volunteering for this one day event. Thank you for supporting your child’s love of reading! Please contact Mary Vedborg at if you have any questions.

Payments Made By Check
Please note that when you are writing a check, it must be written in either black or blue ink. Checks written in any other color will be returned and a fee will charged.

Chaparral Supports Healthy Dining
Kids eating healthy and a school fundraiser you don’t have to pay for? Yes, it’s possible. There’s an app for that! We’re excited to be participating in the Healthy Dining School Rewards Program. All you have to do is download the FREE smartphone app and scan the Rewards QR code when you dine at any of the nine participating restaurants, including The Kebab Shop, California Pizza Kitchen, Wendy’s and The Broken Yolk Café. All of the money raised from memberships of participating restaurants pays for PE programs (and other wellness-related initiatives) at Poway Unified School District elementary schools, including ours! MAY 8TH 6PM - 7:30PM

Chaparral is EXCITED to host The California Mathematics Council on Friday May 8th in the MPR. The Mathematics Festival is an exciting school-wide event to expose students, teachers, and parents to key critical mathematics topics in a positive, self exploratory, festival-like atmosphere. The Mathematics Festival program is Common Core Standards based and designed for all students to access fun, yet challenging math activities.

Smarter Balance Testing
Our Smarter Balance Testing window continues for our 3rd through 5th graders and will run into the month of May. This testing is what replaces the STAR Testing that has been done in previous years. Please make sure that your students are on time each day, as well as sleeping well and eating a healthy breakfast each morning! Also, please make every effort to schedule appointments for after school hours; this will minimize disruption to not only your student, but to their classmates as well. Finally, we will be allowing visitors/volunteers on campus during the testing period, but we ask that you be quiet as you’re moving around the campus.
