WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD STAY HOME FROM SCHOOL?

Please take a few minutes at home to carefully check your child’s health before he/she leaves for school each morning. The following are a few suggestions, which may help to guide you:

REASONS FOR KEEPING YOUR CHILD HOME:

~Illness during the night
~Fever is present (100 degrees or greater)
~Complaints of nausea, upset stomach, vomiting, headache, diarrhea prior to leaving for school
~Development of a rash on face and/or body
~Has a severe cold, cough and/or sore throat
~Has inflamed eye(s) with discharge from them

Please Remember: An ill child cannot function properly in the classroom. The spread of illness and disease through class or school can be more easily monitored if sick children remain at home during the acute stage of an illness. If the school health tech detects any of the above, your child will be sent home.

People with influenza-like illness are to remain home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever (100o F [37.8o C]) without the use of fever-reducing medications.

A student’s absence should be reported on the School Absence Hotline by calling: (858) 485-0042 x4202.

Homework can also be requested on this phone message, please indicate when you will be picking it up.

Principal's Reminders

Calendar Note
Please remember that there will be no school on Monday, September 7 in observance of Labor Day!

School Site Council Opportunity
Each public school has a School Site Council which is comprised of both school personnel and parents. The purpose of the Council is to review school goals based on school data and allocate the funds necessary to support the goals. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents who are interested in learning about the infrastructure that supports our children’s education. The Council meets four times during the school year ( October, November, January, and May) from 8:00am to 9:00am. Our first meeting for the 2015-2016 school year will be on October 1.
Currently we have five parent positions open which are two year terms.

If you are interested in serving on Chaparral’s School Site Council, please submit a brief paragraph (100 word max) by Friday September 4, to the following Chaparral e-mail address lwilken@powayusd.com, that states why you would like to be considered. Please put “ School Site Council” as the subject of your email. These submissions will be put out to the community for a vote. Thank you for your participation in Chaparral’s leadership.

Student Bathroom Policy
Parents, please remember that no adults are allowed to use the student bathrooms. If you need to use the restroom, please use one of the two adult-only bathrooms near the main office.

Playground Policy
Please note that only Chaparral students are allowed to play on our playgrounds and play structures. We know that it looks like fun and that your little ones want to join in, but for both safety and liability reasons, we ask that you keep them with you rather than playing on the playground. We greatly appreciate your cooperation.

Volunteer Policy
Board Policy 4.415 prohibits volunteers on campus until they have completed a Megan's Law background check and have a current TB skin test on file in the office. Additionally, all visitors and volunteers must report to the school office, sign in, and wear a badge/nametag while on campus. PUSD offers free TB testing clinics throughout the school year. Please see Michelle Coffman (mcoffman@powayusd.com) in the office for details.
**Photos for new Volunteer Badges will taken on School Picture Day. If you already have a badge, simply bring it to the office and we will put a new sticker on it for the 2015-2016 school year.

OCIS Contracts
If your student is going to be gone for five days or more, we ask that you stop by the office and fill out an OCIS Contract. This is very important for two reasons. First, your child will not fall behind or miss any assignments while they are gone; they will return to school ready to jump back in with their class. Secondly, did you know that our school loses funding for each day that your child is gone? By completing a contract, the school will still receive full funding, allowing more dollars to be put back into our classrooms. Everyone benefits when a contract is completed!

Parking and Speed
Please remember that Pomard (off Tannin Dr.) is a private road and access or parking on this street is illegal. Law enforcement has been contacted, so please park on Tannin, Solera, or Valle Verde to avoid being ticketed. Please also dive slowly & carefully and obey ALL traffic laws. Your cooperation is appreciated as we strive to maintain good relations with our neighbors.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me rbuhr@powayusd.com.

Warmly,
Rhiannon Sharp Buhr

PTA and Chaparral Foundation Announcements

Help Hawks Soar Packets
Thank you to everyone that has already contributed to our Help Hawk Soar campaign. It's no secret that state funding for education is limited to the basics in California, but thanks to volunteer contributions from our Chaparral community, we're able to expand the horizon of our students' educational experience. HHS is our main fundraiser for the year. It takes the place of product based fundraisers like candy bars or wrapping paper and allows our kids to take part in school wide enrichment programs such as art, music and enhanced PE, school assemblies, and character education and drug prevention programs. Our Hawks also can participate in fitness club, school based community service days, free family activities - such as our family movie night and dances - and much more. All because of your donation!

There are many ways you can contribute. Send a check back with the packet handed out on back to school night, pay online at www.chaparalhawks.com, or you can pay at any upcoming PTA/CEF event.

For more information go to our website www.chaparralhawks.com and click on "our cause".
Please note that HHS packets are due back to your students teach by September 4th.

Picture Day
Picture day is coming up fast. Please mark your calendars for September 16-17 and have your kiddos ready to look their best! Pictures will be taken during school and sent home to you at a later date. You can then choose which pictures/package you want to order. It's as simple as that!
Look for more information as the date gets closer.
