Ms. Bohn
Ms. Bohn has worked in the Poway School District since 2006, and joins us after serving several years as
Counselor at Black Mountain Middle School. Previously, she was a history teacher in the San Diego Unified School District, including UCSD Preuss. Ms. Bohn enjoyed teaching history and having students engaged in conversations about how history repeats itself and affects their personal lives.
While Ms. Bohn truly enjoyed the classroom, she noticed the disturbing recurrence of too many students not ready to learn. She learned when life becomes difficult for some students it is hard for them to focus on academics. Ms. Bohn's experience as a classroom teacher motivated her to become a counselor with the hope of helping students overcome obstacles that can get in the way of them learning on pace with their grade levels. She says, "It is almost impossible for students to learn when they are distracted by stressful situations or conditions." Ms. Bohn is also certified Mindfulness teacher in hopes of helping students to deal with anxiety, depression and emotional regulation. Too often, students are under academic, social and personal pressure that they are unable to achieve their full potential. Helping students to learn how to slow down and to have more self-compassion has now become Ms. Bohn’s life’s passion.
Ms. Bohn began her teaching career at a school for boys in residential care. During her time there, she recognized the young men did not have family members or friends around to give them comfort. Ms. Bohn's mother encouraged her by pointing out that the time in class may have been the only time in the day someone said something nice to them. From that, Ms. Bohn began to greet her students each day with, "Good morning, beautiful children."
After sixteen years in education, students can still hear Ms. Bohn's greeting, "Good morning, beautiful children." It is a reminder that we all have a beautiful light shining inside us. And on those days when we don't feel very good, we can be reminded we are still okay.
