BMMS Academy Information Night 1.26.22 (download)
Greetings Families and Students,
Fifth grade is getting closer to completion and it is time to start thinking about the transition to 6th grade. I’d like to take this opportunity to invite all 5th grade students and their parents to a virtual information meeting about the Academy at Black Mountain Middle School.
The BMMS Academy is focused on high student expectations, goals, and results, personal choice and commitment empowering students to become responsible leaders. The Academy represents those students who are willing to do their very best.
The Academy offers depth and complexity to the standard curriculum and a learning community that is strong. Given a rigorous curriculum, the ideal Academy student is one who is focused on academic performance, understands the need to invest extra time and effort, makes no excuses and takes no shortcuts - all in all, a student who is determined and committed to being successful.
The Academy is a family, meaning the students, staff, and parents work together. Participation in the Academy program requires parents to be highly involved and responsible for ensuring their student’s success. Through a high level of parent-teacher-student collaboration, it is the belief of the Academy that the student will flourish and become a more responsible, resilient, and independent learner.
At the current time, our plan is to continue with the BMMS Academy for the 2022-2023 school year by accepting a limited number of students as long as we're able to raise the funds necessary to keep our program running. In planning for the 2022-2023 school year, we are looking to raise at least $100,000 which would enable us to bring in another class of BMMS Academy sixth grade students. Interest Forms will be available to the students/parents attending this virtual information night.

6th Grade Camp Information
Dear Families of Sixth Grade Students:
This year your child will have the opportunity to participate in the Sixth Grade Outdoor Education Program at Camp Cuyamaca. All sixth grade classes will be attending camp in early January 2022 (week of 1/3/22 or 1/10/22). The cost of the five-day camp is $415.00, which includes transportation to and from camp, food, lodging and medical insurance. Due to COVID restrictions students will be assigned one of the two weeks offered. The decision will be based on the number of students participating. Students will be admitted in the order their completed forms and payment are received. In addition, all students attending camp must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test before going to camp (regardless of vaccination status). COVID-19 tests may include:
· PCR test taken within 72 hours before arrival to camp (usually 10:30am-11:00am on Monday)
· Rapid antigen test taken within 24 hours of arrival at camp (usually 10:30am-11:00am on Monday)
· Home COVID-19 tests are NOT ACCEPTED
Please note the important dates below:
· Campership Applications due November 19, 2021
· ALL forms and payment due December 10, 2021
You may pay the fee in full of $415.00 by December 10th, or in two installments of $207.50.
The due dates for the two installments are:
· 1st installment November 10, 2021
· 2nd installment December 10, 2021
· ALL PAYMENTS ARE DUE DECEMBER 10th
Checks payable to Black Mountain Middle School. In the memo line please reference 6th Grade Camp, your child’s name, and their Science teacher’s last name.
Since camp activities directly correlate with 6th Grade curriculum standards, we strongly encourage students to attend; however participation is not mandatory. Students not attending camp are still required to attend school and will be placed in a sixth grade “Campus Camp” at Black Mountain Middle School for the week.
If the cost of camp presents a significant hardship for your family, a limited number of partial scholarships may be available. For further information regarding camperships, please contact the Principal’s secretary, Monique Cordeau at 858-484-1300, ext. 3923.
· All required registration forms are in this packet of information. PLEASE NOTE: Whether or not your child is going to camp, all registration and health forms must be returned to the school by December 10th, 2021.
· Additional information outlining the times and procedures for students’ departure to camp, as well as their return to school, will be sent home the week of December 12th.
