  •   Black History Month

Why do we celebrate Black History Month? It is important that we study Black History to honor the contributions of African American people, famous and not, who have helped shape our country.

When we observe Black History Month, we give students of all races the opportunity to learn about a past and a people of which they may have limited awareness.

Black history is about joy, love, and celebrating the genius of those contributions and how our country has benefited. Black history IS American history.

We know that one month is not nearly enough to recognize the impact of Black leaders, scientists, scholars, and innovators who have so long been overlooked and underrepresented. We celebrate our diversity so each and every student feels welcome and supported at Bernardo Heights Middle School.

Do you know why we celebrate in February?
February was chosen because President Lincoln’s birthday and Frederick Douglass’ birthday are both in February. Carter Woodson created what he called Negro History Week in February of 1926. His dream was to educate ALL children about African American History by Highlighting African American culture, fighting for equality, and celebrating Black heroes.

Join us in continuing Mr. Woodson’s legacy!
