All students are enrolled in a homeroom for the four years they attend Westview. The homeroom teacher serves as the point of contact for the student regarding the dissemination of school information. The goal is that the student will develop a connection to the homeroom teacher, providing an adult on campus the student can go to. Contact your student's homeroom teacher via telephone or email.

Identified students will meet once a week to exchange mutual support, often focusing on a shared area of difficulty. Parents, students, or staff members are welcome to request placement in a support group. Contact your student's counselor for more information.

As Peer Counselors (PCs), our hope is that we can help everyone on campus and in some way reach out to our peers. A PC is someone who sets a good example on campus and strives to:

• Regard others with respect and value all differences
• Respect confidentiality at all times except when there is a threat of danger to self or others
• Refrain from giving advice: respect the ability of the student to arrive at his/her own solutions
• Strive to maintain a healthy lifestyle and healthy self-concept

Peer Counseling provides:

• Tutoring: PC's provide individual and small group tutoring in various subjects. Tutoring opportunities are offered throughout the day and after school. Students can be assigned or access help on a drop-in basis.
• Mentoring: Mentors are paired up with another student to provide academic or personal/social supports. Building a relationship is key to developing trust and helping the student achieve their goals. Mentors also support new students to Westview.
• Awareness: PCs spread awareness about various topics including: suicide prevention, Red Ribbon Week, healthy relationships, and other topics relevant to our campus.
• Outreach: Outreach is involved in multiple events across campus.  We're responsible for reaching out to the students on campu to not only make sure they're informed on the events being help, but also doing everything we can to ensure they're truly getting the "Westview experience".

Mentoring helps connect students with a trained peer mentor who can guide them in developing self-esteem, creating healthy relationships, and making positive life decisions. We strive to bring together caring peer mentors to work with students who may need support and encouragement. Peer mentors encourage and help these students achieve success in personal, academic, and social endeavors. Mentors can also help their mentee with school work and organization, making connections to other students and staff on campus, finding areas of interest, as well as simply providing a listening ear. Students are free to choose a mentor by reviewing the mentor profiles or they can be assigned by the Peer Mentor program coordinator. The Caring Connections Center (CCC) is a "family resource center" and part of the PUSD Student Support Services Department. The focus of service is for students in grades K-12 who may be experiencing any of the following:

• Difficult situations at home or in school
• Depression
• Continued academic failure
• Involvement in violence-related offenses
• Alcohol or other drug related behavior

Families may be referred by school personnel, or may choose to self-refer for assistance. Once referred to the Caring Connections Centers, families participate in a "Family Conference" to discuss school perceptions, goals, family concerns, "stressors", medical issues, and family background.

At the conference, families learn to identify and prioritize their concerns, create an Action Plan, and connect with appropriate school and community resources. The goal of the family conference is to build on family strengths while encouraging self-advocacy and awareness of community services that support student well-being.

The Caring Connections Center services are available to all Poway Unified School District students and families. Contact the Caring Connection Center, a site counselor or administrator for more information.

A wide variety of Parent Education Workshops are offered through PUSD. Please check the Parent Education Course website for class topics and schedules.

A family qualifies for Youth In Transition if a family or student lives in any of the following situations:

• In a shelter, motel, vehicle, or campground
• In a hotel/motel-no paid for by any type of insurance
• On the Street
• In an abandoned building, trailer, campsite, or other inadequate accommodations
• Doubled up with friends or relatives because affordable housing cannot be found - and that doubled up situation puts the family or students sleeping in some type of temporary situation/location
