DNHS Varsity Boys Coaching Staff
Varsity Head Coach - Bob Spahn
Coach Bob Spahn enters his 11th year at DNHS as the Varsity Head Coach. A retired Marine, Bob proudly served our country for 20 years. After retiring from the Marine Corps, Bob and his wife Felicia became entrepreneurs and owned a small business for 12 years. Prior to becoming the head coach at DNHS, Bob was on the RBHS boys basketball coaching staff for 7 years where he coached the Freshman, JV and was the varsity assistant for his last year at RBHS. Bob has been the first and only head coach at DNHS. During the last 10 years as the head coach at Del Norte, Bob has had 3 players recognized as DNHS Athlete of the Year, 2 players recognized as DNHS Scholar Athlete of the Year and most recently, Bob was recognized as DNHS Coach of the Year. During the 2018-19 season, the varsity team compiled a record of 19-11 with an appearance to the CIF Semi-Finals game. Bob is an "off campus" coach and is married to his wife Felicia. Bob and Felicia reside in Rancho Bernardo and spend lots of their time with family; Sarah, Steve, Marshall, Kim, Jake and Steven.
Varsity Asst Coach - James Shertz
Coach Shertz began coaching High School basketball in 2010. He was the freshman coach from 2010-2012. In 2012 he took over the position of JV coach. He was there from 2012-2014. In 2014 he became an assistant at the varsity level, where he still currently serves on the DNHS basketball coaching staff. Coach Shertz has also coached youth basketball. He has coached all ages of youth basketball from 4th to 8th grade for the Nighthawks Youth Basketball Club. He also has coached youth teams and worked youth camps for the Top Gun Basketball Academy and Sabres Basketball. Every summer, Coach Shertz works at the Del Norte Nighthawks Youth Summer Camp. As a coach, his finest accomplishment has been winning multiple championships at ThriveSD and Top Gun Leagues in the 8th grade division. James also won The Fallbrook Classic Tournament as the Freshmen Coach on the way to a 1 loss season. Coach Shertz played High School Basketball at Rancho Bernardo High School. He was a 2-year varsity player from 2005-2007. His Senior year at Rancho Bernardo, Coach Shertz was named team Captain of the Rancho Bernardo High School's basketball team. Coach Shertz was named to the All Palomar League Second Team and was also voted Offensive Player of the Year at Rancho Bernardo two years in a row. Following High School, James played 1 year at a prep school in Virginia called Massanutten Military Academy. At Massanutten Military Academy, James received an award for Highest GPA and The Leadership award. Coach Shertz received his bachelor’s degree from Cal State University San Marcos in 2013. He was a kinesiology major with the focus of pre-physical therapy. Outside of basketball, Coach Shertz is a certified personal trainer for youth athletes at RedLine Athletics in 4S. He is also a group fitness trainer at The Camp Transformation Center, which is a HIIT training facility in Temecula. A James has his NASM AND SPS personal training certifications. In James' free time, he enjoys being in the gym working out and spending as much time as possible outdoors with his 6-year-old Siberia Husky Lobo.
Varsity Asst Coach - Kevin Keller
Coach Kevin Keller is honored to be a part of the DNHS family and has been in the teaching and coaching profession for 3 decades and truly enjoys working with young people in and out of the classroom. He is married with two adult children; Kodi and Kyle. Kevin and his wife Linda of 30 years traveling and playing backgammon. Kevin began his teaching career in 1993 after graduating from CSUN with a History degree and obtaining his teaching credential. He has taught at three local high schools to include Vista HS,RBHS and is currently teaching Civics here at DNHS. His first coaching job was as a Freshman coach at Alemany high in the San Fernando valley. His first head coaching job was as the Women's coach at Los Angeles Pierce college. In 1993 his family relocated to the San Diego area and Kevin served as an assistant coach at Mt. Carmel for two years and then in the same role at Vista high for two years. He then became the head coach at Vista where he led the Panthers to two league titles and was named Palomar league Coach of the Year in 1999. In 2000 he accepted the head job at RBHS and served in that role for the next seven years. In his time at RB his teams won two league titles and made the CIF playoffs every year. After stepping down at RB he then coached golf at RB for three more years until he made the move to DNHS where he has been an assistant coach for the boys’ varsity team for the past 7 years. Kevin loves being a part of the Nighthawks and is excited about continuing to build the basketball program and to positively contribute to the academic excellence here at DNHS. GO NIGHTHAWKS!
Varsity Asst Coach - Lamar Andrews
Coach Lamar Andrews played basketball at the collegiate level while attending California State University, Chico. Lamar was part of three Chico State conference title teams from 1992-1994, earning a trip to the NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional in 1992-1993. Graduating with a double major in Political Science and Sociology. Lamar is President/CEO of a Sports Management firm called Shining Stars Management, Inc. which has worked with professional athletes such as: Terrell Davis, LaDainian Tomlinson, Darren Sproles, Chris Chambers, Matt Wilhelm, Legedu Naane, Michael Turner, Rogers Beckett, and many more. Lamar has coached at every level at Del Norte HS Boys’ Basketball program and enjoys working and developing young men to be successful on the court but most importantly in life. Lamar has leveraged his understanding of basketball, both on and off the court, to teach, train and motivate young players. Over the last several years, Lamar has developed a following for his one-on-one workouts. Lamar and his wife, Dee Dee, were married in the summer of 2002. They have two kids; Savvy and Amon.
Junior Varsity Head Coach - Matt Clark
Coach Matt Clark is entering his second year as Head Coach of the High School JV Boys team. He has also coached at the Freshman level in ’09-’10 (Assistant Coach) and ’15-’18 (Head Coach). Additionally, he has coached program since it began in 2009 covering grades 3-8. Outside of the Del Norte community Coach Clark worked at the Jim Brogan Academy where he specialized in being a shooting coach and personalized instructor from 2007-20015. He played for the Bronco Ball Club Team during his 6th
grade years and kept playing in rec leagues through high school. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with friends and family at local sporting events and BBQs. Coach Clark has enjoyed every moment of his time coaching at all levels and looks forward to another great year.
Freshman Head Coach - James Cloud
Coach James Cloud is a former student-athlete from Mission Bay High School, in San Diego, CA, where he was a three-year varsity guard/forward. Shortly after his high school career came to an end, James decided to help coach and train kids from all ages at Martin Luther King Jr. Rec Center. James also was a volunteer coach at O'Farrell Charter School for one year, as well as, being a volunteer coach at Mission Bay High School. He now joins Del Norte High School as the Freshman Head Coach while also working within the Nighthawk Youth Club. James is excited to help and grow these young men to strive for great things.
