•   Please Remember Your ID

When coming to sign a student out of school early for any reason please remember we will always ask to see a picture ID. The person signing out must be a parent or guardian. If someone other than the parent/guardian is picking your student up early, they need to be on the emergency list and the parent/guardian will need to call the school and give verbal consent. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping your student safe and following Poway Unified School District policy.

  •   Recess and Lunch Safety Rules

The school safety committee, in conjunction with administration and staff, have recommended that we reinforce rules that have been in place, and may not have been consistently enforced.  These slight adjustments are based on observation and data - mainly, the number of collisions on the blacktop with students running to and from recess.     More and more students are eating their snacks or starting their lunch on the way to the lunch area.  This results in dropped food and trash from dropped wrappers/snack bags all over our campus.  As a food safety precaution, PLEASE remind students it is a rule to wait until they are sitting in the lunch area to begin eating.  If students do not have snacks at recess they are free to go immediately to the playground at a walk.   Many students have gotten into the habit of standing, playing and walking around the lunch area.  Again, as a food safety precaution, we will begin the “sitting until dismissed” rule during lunch.  All students are required to sit, eat and wait to be dismissed for play time.  Trash is disposed of at dismissal.  Students have 15-20 minutes of time to eat, visit with friends and then 20 minutes of play time.    The last and possibly most important tweak to the system is freeze on the bell.  When the bell rings, students will freeze and look to the yard duty.  When everyone is frozen, a yard duty will give two blasts on the whistle to release them so they may walk to their lines.  This will reduce collisions between students leaving recess and those arriving.   Your assistance in discussing these rules with your child, prior to our start date, December 13th, would greatly be appreciated.  The safety of our students is as important to us as their learning.

  •   Welcome Mrs. Garrison – Assistant Principal

  •   Late Item Drop Off

Please help us reduce the amount of interruptions during the school day with late/forgotten items being dropped off in the office. These items include everything from books, homework, lunches, band instruments and messages for students with after school plans. We know teachers and parents both value every student’s instruction time. We have begun a new drop-off policy to encourage less class time interruptions. For lunches, snacks or water bottles:  Please tell your students to check in the office at the start of their recess time.  If they have not come for it, we will then call them to pick the item up. For late homework, we will no longer call classrooms and we will email the teacher for the student to pick up. We have also had many afternoon phone calls to relay messages regarding pick-up plans or reminders for afterschool activities. Please relay these messages to students before school starts or send a note with the student to remind them in order to limit the amount of class disruptions.   The new drop off policy is now in place.  Please take the steps to ensure students have what they need for their school day before being dropped off for school.

    Character Counts!

    December Focus:  All Pillars

As a part of our positive behavior plan, Westwood embraces the Character Counts six pillars of good character.  Each month we focus on a pillar sharing morning messages on the focus pillar for the month.  Thus far we have had lessons on Trustworthiness and Respect, the perfect way to begin the year.  During subsequent months we will focus on Responsibility, Caring, Fairness and Citizenship.  Discussions about character are woven into the fabric of classroom culture and instruction.  We are a school where Character truly Counts!!

Students are rewarded with Character Awards when they are “caught” showing good character. The award address the specific pillar the student was demonstrating, sometimes more than one pillar at a time.  They the are able to submit their award for a chance drawing at Friday Flag for school wide recognition.

Any students making choices that might not be the best are also addressed with a Character Violation.  As a part of restorative justice, this is a time to reflect on the pillars and how they might change their behaviors to become a productive member of the Westwood Roadrunner Family.
