Welcome to Sunset Hills! We are glad you’re here and look forward to having you become part of the Sunset Hills Learning Community. Sunset Hills Elementary School, established in 1974, has a reputation for providing an excellent learning environment for students. We pride ourselves on implanting a positive school wide climate where “Seagulls Soar and Character Counts!” 

Sunset Hills Elementary School is a proud member of the  NO EXCUSES UNIVERSITY (NEU) national network of schools.  College readiness is not the expectation that all students will attend college, but instead, it is the belief that we must prepare all students to have a full range of postsecondary education and training options available to them after high school. We believe that   elementary education is the foundation for all future academic achievement.   All of our classrooms have adopted a College or University and we proudly wear a college bound No Excuse shirt every Monday to kick off each week.
 
All staff at Sunset Hills commit to a culture of “Universal Achievement” for all students. Visitors regularly comment about the friendly and welcoming environment of our school and the intense level of commitment every staff member has for each student’s success. Character Counts lessons are embedded in many activities on campus including our TRRFFC Thursday assemblies where we come together to celebrate good character, friendship, our community and school pride.  Each TRRFFC Thursday closes with our students, staff and parents enthusiastically pronouncing our Sunset Hills Seagull Chant: "Sunset Hills is the Place to go. Setting goals is how we grow. Responsible is what we'll be. Fair, Caring and Trustworthy, Respectful Citizens, Respectful citizens of Sunset Hills. Seagulls!"
 
The cornerstone of this educational parent community is the partnership of the Sunset Hills PTA and Foundation. Here at Sunset Hills we are lucky to have two parent-driven organizations that work collaboratively to ensure that our students have what they need to flourish and enjoy the very best elementary school experience. Our PTA strives each year to bring us programs that are academically enriching while the Sunset Hills Foundation works behind the scenes to fund essential academic resources. Our PTA sponsors programs like the Science Fair, Art Gala, Art Odyssey, Encore, Sock Hop, Talent Show, Shoe Box Science, Running Club and transportation for field trips. Parents have many opportunities to assist at school such as classroom support, instructional support like Read Naturally and Morning Reads. Parents and community members volunteer in classrooms regularly, with more than 275 volunteers donating over 5000 hours last year. Our Foundation has raised funds for instructional supplies, Compass Learning, Computer Resource Specialist, Instructional Assistants and Impact Teachers to make differentiated learning a reality for ALL students.
 
The success of Sunset Hills owes much to the staff and parents, who give their time, share their skills and donate resources to our school. Our biggest strength at Sunset Hills is the sense of a caring community who work collaboratively on behalf of each and every student.

Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten Family Night
Please save August 20th from 4:00 pm-5:00 pm for the Family TK/Kdg Night. Come meet your child’s teacher. You will also learn all you need to know about your child’s classroom and the exciting year planned for the students. Please meet in your child’s classroom. The teachers will discuss supplies at that time. (For returning families, this evening is taking the place of the traditional Back to School Night). You do not want to miss this event!
School Tours for new families will be hosted on Tuesday, August 20th, from 3:30 pm-4:00 pm. The tours will be given by students and PTA.

Principal Coffee Chat
On the first day of school, there will be a Principal’s Coffee Chat in the multipurpose room at 8:45 am. Parents are invited to join representatives from our PTA and Educational Foundation and the Principal where we will enjoy refreshments together and celebrate the beginning of the school year.

Kindergarten Transition Days (KID)
*** To ease your child’s transition into a full-day Kindergarten program, all students will be dismissed at 1:00 pm through September 27, 2019. Students will have an opportunity to experience their first full day on October 1st.
ESS (see below) will be available if you require afternoon childcare during this time.

Kindergarten Playground
Kindergartners have a separate playground at the back of the school. This is where they line up at drop off time. After school, parents must pick up Kindergartners from their teacher on the blacktop of the big playground. Kindergarteners cannot walk out to the drive-through pick up line unless an older sibling picks him or her up from the teacher.

Arrival
Students will report to the playground and line up with their teacher by 8:25 am at their designated classroom number spot. Playground supervision will begin at 8:10 am, twenty minutes before school begins. Students in grades 1-5 should enter school through the playground gate, and kindergarten students should walk to the kindergarten playground. Please do not have your child arrive before 8:10 am, as there will be no adult supervision on either playground until that time. The tardy bell rings at 8:25 am and school begins promptly at 8:30 am. Students are expected to be in their seats ready to learn by that time. After the 8:30 bell, students will need to come to the front office for a late slip before going to class.

Dismissal
At dismissal time, teachers will walk their students to the front of the school, where parents will meet their children. Please do not meet your children inside the school or by the classroom, as it is a distraction to the learning environment and causes great congestion. Our goal is to maximize instructional time for student learning and decrease congestion in the hallways.
*Note- Students may not remain at school following dismissal unless they are enrolled in ESS or enrichment classes.

School Office Hours are as follows:
The office will be closed from June 20th through August 7th.
Beginning August 8 th , the office will be open daily from 7:30 am – 4:00 pm

Back To School Night
Back to School Night is Thursday, August 22nd. This is a special night for parents to meet their child’s teacher and learn about the curriculum. This is an adult only event.

Closed Campus
Once students arrive, they may not leave campus without being signed out in the School Office by a parent or other authorized persons. To ensure the safety of our children, you may be asked to show identification when picking up your child. All visitors must check in the front office prior to entering the school.

Visitation and Volunteers
Parents are always welcome and encouraged to visit and help in the classroom. Visits should be scheduled with the teacher ahead of time. The Sunset Hills volunteer program provides opportunities for parents and community members to help children support teachers and enrich lives. Volunteers can work directly with children or on a variety of other tasks or projects.
*** You must have the Megan’s Law Clearance and a current TB test(negative reading) and signed “Volunteer code of Conduct” on file in the office in order to do any work with students (i.e. classroom volunteer, driver on field trip).

School Lunch
Students have the option of buying lunch at school. Please prepay if possible at  myschoolbucks.com. Lunch, which includes milk, is served daily in the cafeteria for $3.25. If your child brings a lunch be sure to include only as much food as your child eats. Lunches should have the student’s name and room number on the sack or lunch box. Free and reduced prices are available for those who qualify. Please ask in the office for the appropriate paperwork.

Medications at School
If your child takes medication during the day, a “Physician’s Recommendation for Medication” form must be obtained from the school, completed by the physician, and returned to the school. No medication will be given at school without this form. An adult must bring the medication to the School Office in the original container the medication is dispensed. This includes aspirin, inhalers, cough drops, etc.

The absence reporting phone number is (858)679-2639. State law requires that attendance be verified. Please call the absence line if your child will be absent from school. In addition, please also call if they will be tardy more than 30 minutes.

Birthday Treats 
At Sunset Hills we encourage non-edible treats for recognizing your child’s birthday at school. As our school district and country move toward healthier choices for our kids, 28-35 rounds of sweet birthday treats is a big bite to swallow! In lieu of sending in your child’s favorite dessert item to share with the class, please choose a favorite book to donate to the classroom library, or special birthday pencils, erasers, or bookmarks. Thank you for your understanding!

ESS
Sunset Hills provides an ESS program, which is a fee-based before and after school childcare program. ESS is open from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm. All students planning to participate in ESS must be registered at our ESS building. Please call our coordinator, Cheri Gracey (858)484-2982, for information regarding registration and fees.

Stay Connected
There are different ways to stay connected at Sunset Hills:
  • Mrs. Wilken sends out her weekly newsletter via email on Sunday evenings. Sometimes it is accompanied with a voice message.
  • There is also an app that allows Principal Wilken to send out texts when there is a change in schedule, reminders, or emergencies. You “Opt” in by sending a message to 81010.
