Dear Sunset Hills Families,
We are excited to welcome our students on the first day of school. The following information should answer many of your questions regarding the beginning of the school year. Our office and custodial staff have been very busy getting ready for the new school year, while welcoming some new staff to the Sunset Hills family. Teachers have been in and out all summer, creating a warm learning environment to greet your child with on opening day!
Please visit our school website to learn more about our campus and for upcoming information. As you begin to prepare for school, here are a few pieces of information I hope you find helpful. We look forward to seeing you on the first day of school!
With Seagull Smiles,
Jessica Pineda

1st Day of School: August 17, 2022
The playground opens with supervision at 8:35 AM. There will be no adult supervision prior to 8:35 AM. As a reminder, the first day of school is a very busy day in our parking lot. Please plan for some extra time to either walk with your children to school, or find parking on the street. The first bell rings at 8:50 AM. You may walk with your child to the playground and to class on the first day of school.
Children will line up behind their room numbers located on the playground. Please join me for our first Principal’s Coffee Talk in the Reading Garden at 9:00 AM on the first day of school. I look forward to meeting with parents for an informal talk while the teachers are getting our students off to a great start to the new school year. Coffee will be served, thanks to the generous donation of the PTA.

The playground will be open to students in the morning beginning at 8:35 AM. No supervision will be provided before 8:35 AM so students should not arrive at school before this time. To ensure the safety of our children, you will be required to show identification when you pick up your child.
School Breakfast/ Lunch:

Students will report directly to the playground after eating breakfast. Students not eating breakfast need to arrive when the playground opens at 8:35 AM.
Meal program details are provided on the Food and Nutrition Department website at https://powayusdnutrition.com/. Families are still encouraged to submit a school meal application for free and reduced-priced meal benefits because this information may be used for other programs such as Federal and State funding for your school, reduced registration fees for academic tests, free or discounted fees for bus passes, ESS childcare, and athletic programs, discounted rates for internet service and many more! The application can be found online at https://www.myschoolapps.com/. Applications must be submitted on an annual basis.

Stay Connected:
In an effort to reduce costs and to reduce our school's carbon footprint, we have moved away from paper flyers as much as possible. As a result, there are several different ways to receive information from our school. Online flyers: peachjar.com/index.php?a=28&b=138®ion=52519
Principal Coffee Chats:
Principal Coffee Chats gives our parents an opportunity to hear about and discuss various school topics, in an open forum with our principal. The first one is August 17th at 9:00 AM in the reading garden. I will also hold a virtual PM meeting at 6:00 PM. The same agenda items will be covered at the PM Coffee Chat. These meetings will occur monthly and follow the same format. We will hold a 9:00 AM session, in person at the school. We will also hold a 6:30 PM virtual session to accommodate families who were unable to attend in person.
PTA/FOUNDATION:
Our PTA and Educational Foundation are two very important organizations at Sunset Hills. They support many activities and programs that directly impact student learning and our positive school environment. I urge you to join me in becoming a member. Your participation in one of these two organizations will allow you to support our school in a way that best fits your lifestyle. Many parents want to help in classrooms. Many want to help with special events. Others want to contribute financially to enhance programs for our children. Look for additional information from our PTA and Educational Foundation on the school website or in the first day packet of information that your child will bring home. Thank you in advance to those of you who become a part of these outstanding organizations. Your support is truly appreciated!
