BLAST exists to radiate a heart of love to the surrounding community by providing a caring and supportive environment where the needs of the whole child are protected and fostered.  We want to develop a network of support that will stimulate relationships, build a sense of community and offer positive role modeling.

BLAST was established in 1997 as a character-driven, reduced-cost extended school day program at Los Penasquitos Elementary School, located in the Rancho Penasquitos area of San Diego.  The application process assesses the needs of each family, focusing especially on those that qualify for free or reduced-price meals at school and single parents who work and/or are in school full time.  It is a collaborative community effort that depends on the support and generosity of committed individuals, families, churches and businesses to bring this exciting opportunity to the Rancho Penasquitos area.

BLAST is closed during the summer months.

A combination of paid staff and volunteers provide a 1:15 ratio that assist students with homework and provide recreational supervision. Interactive group sessions and lots of teachable moments provide opportunities for character development and positive role modeling. Volunteers may be of high school age or older. Regularly scheduled adults submit to fingerprinting, background checks and have a current TB clearance.
