WELCOME BACK DEER CANYON - Principal's Message

 

Summer 2021
 
Dear Families of Deer Canyon,
 
The start of school is just around the corner! I hope you have enjoyed a fun filled summer and are ready for a wonderful school year. Knowing the busy days ahead, highlighted below are some important start of school activities and events. Stay up to date throughout the year by visiting our website at Deer Canyon Elementary School. The Google Calendar will keep you apprised of school, PTA and Foundation activities. Please review and plan accordingly. We have an exciting year ahead!
 
  • August 16th, 1:00pm – 1:30pm. Connect Ed Messages for Class Placement. Listen for your phone to ring and email to “ding”! Your NEW classroom teacher will be calling and emailing with a special welcome message for you regarding your class assignment for the coming year.
Ø  August 16th, 10:00am – 2:00pm Campus Tours for New DCES Families. Our knowledgeable 5th grade students will be providing informal campus tours for families new to Deer Canyon. Join us to learn about our school. Click here to sign up:
Ø  August 17th, 2:00 – 2:20pm (Mrs. Friedman’s Class), 2:30-2:50 (Mrs. Taylor’s Class), and 3:00-3:20pm (Mrs. Fitzgerald’s Class) Meet and Greet. TKs and Kindergarteners and their parents are invited to meet their new teacher on their TK/Kindergarten playground, making the start of school on Wednesday, August 18th a more comfortable experience.  This is informal and optional for our TK and K families. 
Ø  August 17th, Video Welcome from your teacher. Be on the watch for a short video message from your teacher welcoming you to the new school year and previewing your new classroom,
  • August 18th, 7:45am – School begins for ALL Preschool – 5th grade students.
  • August 18th , 12:00pm – TK & Kinder Dismissed
  • August 18th, 2:00pm – 1st – 5th Grades Dismissed
  • August 19th, 8:00am, MPR – PTA Meeting. All are welcome to attend.
  • August 26th, 5:00 (grades PK), 5:30pm (grades TK – 2nd), 6:00pm (grades 3rd – 5th) – Back To School Night via ZOOM
  • September 6th, Labor Day, No School
  • September 27th, Staff Development Day – No School for Students
  • September 28th, Full Day Kindergarten Begins. Kinder dismisses at 2:00pm.
 
Beginning School Year Procedural Updates:
 
Wednesday, August 18th:
MORNING ARRIVAL: Parents will be permitted to walk students to class on this day only (wearing masks, drop student at the door and please do not linger). Families familiar with our campus are strongly encouraged to drop your student at the gate. We will have many adults on campus helping to ensure students arrive in the right location. Parents of Preschoolers and ASD students will drop their children at the gates even on day one as they will be met at the front of the school and walked to class by staff. Families may access campus using the ESS Gate and the Front Gates. School begins at 7:45am. All students should arrive to campus no later than 7:40am. The playgrounds open at 7:25am.
 
DISMISSAL: All PK, TK, K, and 1st grade students will be dismissed from the MPR exterior doors. All 2nd – 5th grade students may dismiss using the ESS Gate, the Front Gates, and the Back Gate. TK and K students dismiss at 12:00pm. PK students dismiss at 1:00pm. 1st-5th grade students dismiss at 2:00pm.
 
Thursday, August 19th and beyond:
MORNING ARRIVAL: Parents will drop students at school gates. Students only will enter campus using the Front Gate and the ESS Gate. Adults on campus will assist students in locating classrooms. Students may access the playground before school (1st-5th grade on the Big Kid Playground, and TK/K on the Kinder Playground). Parents of Preschoolers and ASD students will drop their children at the gates as they will be met at the front of the school and walked to class by staff. School begins at 7:45am. All students should arrive to campus no later than 7:40am. The playgrounds open at 7:25am.

BEFORE SCHOOL SUPERVISION
Children in grades 1 - 5 should arrive on the big kid playground and Transitional Kindergarteners and Kindergartners to the TK/K Playground no earlier than 7:25 a.m., the time that supervision begins. 
 
CHROMEBOOKS:
All students in grades 3-5 will be issued a PUSD Chromebook on Thursday, August 19th.  These Chromebooks will travel between home and school. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure the Chromebooks are charged each night and ready to go in the morning. Students in grades TK-2 will have dedicated classroom carts of Chromebooks for use during the school year.
 
CLOSED CAMPUS
Deer Canyon is a closed campus.  Once children arrive, they may not leave unless a parent or other authorized person comes to the office to sign a release.  To insure the safety of our children, you will be required to show your I.D. when you pick up your student.
 
 
 
SCHOOL LUNCH
The cafeteria lunch will be FREE this year.  If you qualify for free or reduced price lunch, please fill out the application which is available online or in the school office and assists in funding our FREE lunch program. Lunch menu choices may also be viewed at http://powayusdnutrition.com/index.php?sid=0502141943502717&page=menus. Students will be allowed to bring beach towels, clearly labeled with their student’s name, to use during lunch on the grass. Students will be allowed to picnic during their lunch times or sit in the covered lunch area. Shade structures will be set up on the grass for additional shade.
 
SCHOOL MATERIALS & CLASSROOM ORGANIZATION
School materials may again be shared at school. Classroom furniture may also be arranged to best support student learning. Parents may send students to school with a pencil case of personal use items, if desired.
 
MEDICATION AT SCHOOL
If your child is on medication, an “Authorization for Medication Administration” form must be obtained from the school office, completed by your physician, and returned to school.  NO MEDICATION WILL BE GIVEN AT SCHOOL WITHOUT THIS FORM.  An adult must bring the medication to the school office.  At NO time, may children have medication in their possession.  This includes Tylenol, Ibuprofen, inhalers, cough drops, etc.
 
BICYCLE AND SCOOTER RIDING
Riding a bicycle/scooter is limited to children in grades 3rd – 5th.  Each child must wear a helmet and provide a lock for his/her bike/scooter.  Students riding a bike/scooter to school must have a permission slip on file in the office. 
 
ABSENCES
State law requires that pupil attendance be verified.  If your child will be absent, please call the school ABSENCE HOTLINE at 484-4876.  If the school is not notified regarding an absence by 10:00 a.m., we will call you at home or at work for verification. Please do not email the school regarding student absences. All attendance information should be conveyed through the Attendance Hotline.
 
CLASS SIZE LIMITS
Class sizes for the 2021-2022 school year are capped as follows:
TK = 25
K-3 = 26
4-5 = 31
 
SCHOOL COUNSELOR & SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST
We are excited to welcome our school counselor, Mrs. MacDougall, and our school psychologist, Mrs. Presley to campus, each 3 days per week for the coming school year.
