Welcome to the  2020-21 Virtual School Year

Hello Aztec Families,

I want to officially welcome you to the 2020-2021 school year. It has been a summer of planning with variables that seem to change on a daily basis. But the excitement of starting a new school year remains the same and I’m looking forward to what this very special year has in store for all of us.  ...

Virtual Learning

On September 2, 2020, we will begin our school year, remotely. As you can imagine, with the number of variables to consider (students’ and teachers’ health consideration, dual-language immersion needs, homeschool option, virtual academy, need to align with all 39 schools in PUSD, etc.), class placements have been extremely challenging and complex. In addition, we had to simultaneously consider the possibility of returning to campus and what that would entail. Therefore, we will start the year with an initial placement. Some of our upper grades will have combination classes this year.  When an eventual reopening of our schools takes place in PUSD, we will implement the contingency plan.

Contingency Plan (Return to Campus)

When all schools in PUSD are back on campus, we will put into place our AM/PM and Virtual Learning Academy model. Shifting to this plan will mean that we will have to adjust our class placement again at this time. The most likely scenario is that we will have combination classes at all grade levels. Our teachers are ready and energized to make each learning environment rigorous and engaging for our students. The ABES staff worked endless hours over the summer to create our class list for every scenario and therefore, we will not be able to accommodate any class change requests. Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation as we begin this very unique year.

Responding to the COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to be forward thinkers, become flexible with changing information, have empathy for each of our situations, and better understand technology. These are all excellent skills and qualities we want our students to develop as they move into their future. I know the information I shared with you today is a lot to take in, but please remember this is only temporary. Our lives will eventually return to normal, and we will all be back to our Small School with a Big Heart.

Thank you for your ardent support of our school. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at the material distribution and meet your teacher event on Monday for TK-2nd grades and Tuesday for 3rd-5th grades.

With gratitude,
Eddie Park
Principal, ABES
