January 10, 2017

Dear PUSD Families,

It's that time of year, when we engage our Poway Unified stakeholders to help us refine our Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). The LCAP is part of a change in the way the State of California allocates funding to local school districts. Under the new Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), state funding for schools is designed to be more flexible, allowing for more local control over academic spending priorities.

In past years, we gathered feedback from a variety of groups in the community, including:

  • District Advisory Committee (DAC)
  • District English Language Advisory Committee (DELAC)
  • Parents
  • Businesses
  • Civic Groups
  • Community Members
  • Certificated and Classified Employees
  • Students
  • District Directors
  • K-12 Principals

We want all of our stakeholders to be actively participating in the process. This year, we are asking these same groups to provide more input, specifically focused on these five goals:

1. Support high-quality teachers in their implementation of an articulated California standards-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment to ensure College and Career Readiness and Citizenship for all students, TK-12.
2. Create systems and structures that provide multiple pathways of learning and engagement and close the achievement gap for all subgroups.
Strengthen and maintain a safe, healthy, positive, and attractive learning environment for all learners.
Increase parent and student engagement in learning through enhanced community involvement in the education of our students.
Develop, implement and embed a collaborative learning structure and system for adults and students to increase student achievement.

Your input on these topics will be gathered at meetings at individual school sites. Look for an invitation from your school. If you cannot attend in person, please take the survey online.

I look forward to hearing from each of you and thank you for your continued participation in making Poway Unified School District an outstanding place to learn, work and live.

Dr. Tony Apostle

Interim Superintendent
