Poway Unified School District offers FREE State-funded and Head Start preschool classes for children in low-income households.

COVID-19 UPDATE

Valley Preschools (Part Day and State-Funded/Head Start) will start Monday August 3, 2020.
Our remaining Full Day, Expanded Day, Part Day and State-Funded and/or Head Start programs will start September 2, 2020.
Full Day & Expanded Day classes will start on campus. Part Day and State-Funded/Head Start classes will start with virtual learning.

Age Eligibility:

  • Children who will be 4 years, by December 2nd have first priority.
  • Children who will be 3 years, by December 2nd may apply, however class size is limited.
  • If a class is full, children will be placed on a wait list. 

Income Eligibility for State Funded Preschool:

Eligibility for enrollment is based upon State-funded & Head Start Income Criteria. Head Start/State-funded six hour classes require eligibility of both State and Federal income guidelines. State-funded three hour classes require eligibility of State income guidelines.

How to Register: Registration Information

Three easy steps to apply for PUSD's State preschool program.

STEP ONE: CALL FOR APPOINTMENT

Call 858-521-2847 or email preschool@powayusd.com to make an appointment to return your completed application and provide documentation.

STEP TWO: COMPLETE REGISTRATION PACKET

The 20-21 Registration Packet contains all of the forms you'll need to enroll your child. You may get a 20-21 Registration Packet in one of three ways:

STEP THREE: BRING REGISTRATION & DOCUMENTATION TO APPOINTMENT

At your appointment, we will review family eligibility criteria for the state program, such as current income, family size and child's age. You must bring the following documents to your appointment:

1.  Completed Registration Application 
2.  Income Verification - (Examples: pay stubs, cash aid, CalFresh, Section 8, pension, unemployment, child support, self employment declaration):
     For six-hour classes: One year’s proof of income for each adult in household, PLUS one month recent income documentation.
     For three-hour classes: Recent income documentation from past one month for each adult in the household.
3.  Certified copy of birth certificate(s) for ALL children in family.
4.  Copy of child’s immunization record. Immunizations must be complete to register for preschool. Required Immunizations for Preschool: 3 Polio, 4 DTaP 1 MMR on or after the first birthday, 3 Hep B, 1 HIB on or after the first birthday, and 1 Varicella. 5.  Proof of Residency (driver's license, any utility bill or bank statement with your name & address, lease/rent receipt, etc.).

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

State-Funded/Head Start 6-hour classes: Families who are applying for the six-hour State-funded/Head Start classes at Los Penasquitos, Pomerado, Valley or Sundance, must also qualify with Head Start. (See Federal Poverty Guidelines.) Once Head Start and PUSD have determined your eligibility, your child will be placed on the State-funded Eligibility List.

State-Funded 3-hour classes: Families who are applying for the three-hour classes at either Del Norte or Rolling Hills will be reviewed by PUSD for eligibility. If eligible, your child will be placed on the State-funded Eligibility List.

Within thirty (30) calendar days from your appointment, you will receive notification of your eligibility.

One free meal is included for all students in the 3 hour classes and 2 meals for the 6 hour classes. Parents are highly encouraged to volunteer in class 2 days per month.
