Announcing Two Summer Non-credit, Enrichment Global Language Programs

Greetings, PUSD High School Students!

We are very pleased to announce that our Global Languages and Innovative Programs have joined forces with our PUSD Community Education Program to offer two non-credit, enrichment programs for our high school students.  

Both courses will be offered in a hybrid format - using an asynchronous learning platform with a once a week synchronous instructional webinar.  

Descriptions of these programs along with information about how to register are provided below:

American Sign Language for Beginners    

This non-credit course will introduce students to basic skills in production and comprehension of various American Sign Language (ASL) vocabularies and manual alphabet in ASL signs and numbers within topics of commonly used vocabulary terms and basic conversational strategies. Students will also learn about Deaf culture as it is an integral part of ASL and introduced to cultural awareness in order to display appropriate cultural behaviors within Deaf Culture. Learners are expected to immerse into Deaf Culture and ASL by using Target Language (ASL) 99% of the time. PUSD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ONLY.

 Mandarin Chinese for Beginners Course

This non-credit course will  introduce students to the standard Mandarin Chinese language and is designed for students with no or minimal previous background in spoken or written Mandarin. Students will focus on learning essential vocabulary, practicing pronunciation, and understanding simple grammatical structures. This knowledge prepares students to effectively communicate in Mandarin on a limited range of topics related to everyday situations. Students practice listening and speaking in real-life situations, introduction to  Chinese characters, and examine how culture and language interact in China. The online learning platform aims to assist students in developing the oral proficiency and confidence necessary to initiate simple conversations.  PUSD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ONLY
