Students in grades 2 - 7 may be referred for GATE evaluation by parents and/or a classroom teacher.  Either the Otis Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) or the Naglieri Non-Verbal Ability Test (NNAT) will then be administered.  Both the classroom teacher and the parent will be asked to complete questionnaires.  All three pieces of information will then be combined to determine identification for Poway's GATE services.  Students may be referred for testing at any time during grades 2-7, however students who test and are not identified must wait at least one calendar year before testing again, and may test a maximum of three times. Once a child is identified, s/he will not need to test again.

Students who transfer to Poway from another district in which they were identified for GATE services may participate as "provisional" GATE students until records and test scores are received in their new schools. The parent and the new classroom teacher are asked to complete questionnaires. Following an Eligibility Steering Committee Review of test scores and questionnaire responses, students may be identified for services with no further testing required. Alternatively, the Steering Committee may recommend re-testing.

Once identified, students remain in GATE classes throughout their middle school experience. In high school, all students - including GATE students - are encouraged to enroll in Honors and AP (Advanced Placement) courses.
