New Directions Independent Study Program
New Directions Independent Study Program focuses on the students’ total development as individuals while challenging them to strive for their highest level of academic excellence. Key Points include:
- Parents and students choose to enroll at New Directions.
- Available for students in grades 6 – 12.
- Students remain attached to their middle or high school.
- Our focus is on the students’ total development as individuals while challenging them to strive for their highest level of academic excellence.
- Reasons for choosing independent study include (but are not limited to) students who are:
- Participating in artistic or athletic programs which conflict with regular school hours,
- Have health concerns that do not qualify for home tutoring,
- Transferring into the District mid-semester without credit hours,
- Participating in a treatment program,
- Employed full-time to help with financial problems at home,
- Non-graduated seniors (students who are 19 or 20 and who have been continuously enrolled since their 18th birthday) who wish to complete their high school diploma requirements.
- Instructional value is equivalent to a regular classroom program of instruction.
- New Directions’ personnel require the best from our students, a strong work ethic, and regular attendance to the assigned meetings and labs.
- High school students focus on one or two subjects at a time.
- Middle school students focus on Language Arts, Math, Science, PE, and Social Studies.
- Students are assigned a weekly appointment with an instructor who provides personal attention and who assesses, monitors, and assigns five days of work (approximately 20 hours) to be completed independently by the student.
- Students in math and/or biology classes are required to attend mandatory labs each week (in additional to their weekly meeting).
- Students make decisions about their learning rather than relying on their teachers to do it for them. They set goals and deadlines, organize themselves and their work, and evaluate their use of time.
