ELPAC (English Language Proficiency Assessments for California):  The ELPAC is the language proficiency exam the state of California requires us to use to determine the English language skill level of our students who have a language other than English in their home.
ELAC (and DELAC): The ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee) is the school’s committee for the parents of English learners.  This committee provides the opportunity for parents to give input on the schools’ program for English Learners.  The DELAC is the district level committee for the parents of English Learners and is composed of representatives from the schools’ ELAC committees.
EL or ELL (English Learner): An English learner is a student who has a language other than English in the home and is not yet fluent in social and/or academic English
ELD (English Language Development):  The language arts curriculum for English learners, based on California’s English Language Development Standards
FEP (Fluent English Proficient): An FEP student has a language other than English in their home and, in addition, has at least a basic level of proficiency in both social and academic English.
Home Language Survey: When parents originally enroll their child in one of our schools, the parents complete the Home Language Survey, indicating the language(s) spoken in the home.  If there is a language other than English on the survey, we are required to assess the student for English language proficiency.
Reclassified: Reclassified students used to be part of our English Learner (EL) Program but have developed enough social and academic English to meet our criteria to move them out of the EL Program.
SDAIE (Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English): Strategies that teachers use to make information understandable to English learners
Special Education Program: This program provides specialized services to students with identified disabilities (Autism, Learning Disability, physical disabilities, etc.) that interfere with their learning.  The English Learner Program is not part of the Special Education Program.  However, an English learner with an identified disability may also be served through the Special Education Program.  As with all other programs in the district, there is no charge for services or testing provided through the Special Education Program.
