Poway Adult School

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

Posted Date: 8/25/2020

Greetings, everyone, and welcome to Poway Adult School’s Fall Quarter!

Although the learning environment may be different, this fall the quality and variety of Poway Adult School’s courses are going strong. Faced with the closure of school campuses throughout the District, we found ourselves without classrooms to deliver our courses. Through innovative changes, instructor training and technological usage, most of our courses are now available through an online format.

A major difference this term is the expansion of our adult Career Technical Education courses. We heard from many of you about the negative economic impact COVID-19 has had on jobs within our community. Many of our community members found themselves needing to make a career transition or to enhance their current job skills. In response to that need, Poway Adult School has implemented a variety of new programs to help people transition back to the workforce. Some of these new career programs include training to become Court Reporters, Nurse Assistants, Phlebotomy Technicians, and a host of careers in the Information and Computer Technology industry sector. Students can also gain certifications, licenses and certificates through courses in Real Estate, QuickBooks, MS Office Pro, Google Suites and Accounting.

While we are ready to begin our full online format this fall, you’ll notice that there are some courses that were not able to transition effectively to online. For example, some of our community’s favorites that are missing from the fall schedule include cooking, ceramics, orchestra, sewing, and a significant reduction in painting and fitness courses. These courses will return as soon we are given the approval to return to campuses to offer face-to-face instruction.

We hope we will “see” you in class this fall. Remember … Learning never stops at Poway Adult School!

Kathleen Porter, Executive Director
