What is an Internship?

  • An out-of-school, hands-on learning opportunity
  •  An opportunity for a student to gain experience in their career field of choice 
  • An experience that is structured around a course earning the student up to 10 units of credit 
  • An experience that is designed to meet specific goals and outcomes determined by the business, student and PUSD teacher
  • An opportunity for students to learn about all aspects of a career field 

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the intern have liability insurance?
Yes, as long as the internship is unpaid, the students are covered by the Poway Unified School District. If an internship is paid, the business must provide coverage.
Could a business choose their intern?
Yes, we encourage businesses to require a cover letter and resume and to interview potential interns.
Could a business require specific experience?
Yes, businesses can require specific skills, grade levels, types of experiences or classwork.
What type of support will businesses have?

Each intern will be assigned a PUSD teacher to help ensure their success within their internship. You will have direct communication with that teacher and can call or email at any time. Additionally, the teacher will meet with the intern weekly to discuss the internship and to help them expand their work readiness skills.

Requirements for Credit

In order for the student to receive school credit, the following requirements must be met: 
 
  • The student does not take the place of a paid employee.
  • The student must work a minimum of 50 hours within 12 weeks.
  • The internship should benefit the intern in preparing for a future career.
  • Internship should be structured to meet specific learning outcomes and business needs.
  • The student must be enrolled in the Internship course.
