In the CTE Spotlight

Meet Gerardo.   Gerardo is a senior at Del Norte High School and when he graduates this spring will have completed Principles of Biomedical Sciences, Human Body Systems, and Medical Interventions, making him a Health Science Pathway Completer.
What Part of CTE courses have you enjoyed the most?
"I definitely loved the real world application of what we learn in class; whether it was through the unique labs that we completed or the guest speakers that came and spoke to us about their industry, these classes prepared me for my future career."
How has the program influenced your career goals or helped you in college decisions?
"I was already interested in science and medicine, but taking the CTE classes just solidified and confirmed my interest.   I now know for sure that I want to pursue medicine.  My Medical Interventions teacher, Mrs. Craig, introduced me to an internship in a hospital setting, which I recently completed.  This experience further confirmed my college and career goals."
What is one piece of advice you would give to a student taking these classes?
"Ask questions and be involved. You can take so much away from CTE classes. For example, we learned about diabetes in PBS and when I completed my internship in a hospital, a majority of the patients had diabetes.  I was able to discuss with the doctors a lot about the disease, which impressed them."
Whom would you recommend to enroll in the Health Science Pathway?
"Anyone who has any interest at all in the field.  For those who want to study medicine, work in a lab or are just interested in science in general, you will benefit from taking CTE courses."
