This week, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond announced on Monday that 37 California schools have been recognized as 2023 Model Continuation High Schools. Poway Unified’s Abraxas High School is proud to be included among that list, and is highlighted as an example school by the California Department of Education (CDE).

State Superintendent Tony Thurmond announced on Wednesday that 59 California schools have been designated as 2023 Purple Star Schools. Poway Unified’s Oak Valley Middle School is included among that list, in recognition for the school and staff’s commitment to meeting military-connected students’ and families’ unique needs.

The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) and the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) recently announced their 2023 Administrators of the Year, five of whom proudly serve in the Poway Unified School District (PUSD). PUSD is honored to call some of the County’s best and brightest school administrators as our own.

The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) honored nine individuals for their leadership and commitment to educational equity as Lighthouse Awards winners. Two of the nine awardees are from Poway Unified School District.

- Molly Engblom, Tierra Bonita Elementary School Counselor: No Place for Hate Award

- Tram Le-Harkins, Mt. Carmel High School English Teacher: Turnaround Teacher Award

Four students from Poway Unified School District were named 2023 scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition. They join 300 high school scholars from across the United States and North America, selected from nearly 2,000 applications.

This prestigious honor, which highlights the best education practices across the State, is being awarded to the PUSD Career Technical Education (CTE) Program’s “Jump-Starting Pathways to Rewarding Careers” program.
