GATES AND SCHOOL SAFETY

Playground supervision starts at 8:10 am.  In order to ensure the safety of all our students and school community, front gates are locked and closed before school. Students (and their families) that arrive before 8:10 am may enter through the office.  The west gate that opens to the playground will be opened at 8:10 am and locked upon school starting. When dropping your child off in the morning, please continue to pull all the way forward before your child gets out of the car. This will help maintain the flow of traffic.

Please remind your child that NO student may leave the school grounds during the school day without being checked out of the front office.

PTA/FOUNDATION

Our PTA and Educational Foundation are two very important organizations at Sunset Hills. They support many activities and programs that directly impact student learning and our positive school environment. I urge you to join me in becoming a member. Your participation in one of these two organizations will allow you to support to our school in a way the best fits your lifestyle. Many parents want to help in classrooms. Many want to help with special events. Others want to contribute financially to enhance programs for our children. Look for additional information from our PTA and Educational Foundation on the school website or in the first day packet of information that your child will bring home. Thank you in advance to those of you who become a part of these outstanding organizations. Your support is truly appreciated!

PARKING LOT DROP OFF & PICK UP

At arrival and dismissal times the Sunset Hills parking lot is very congested, especially Monday Mornings and Friday afternoons.  Please keep the following in mind:

  • Please be patient, kind and courteous.

  • Do not leave any cars unattended. (parked in the drop off zone or along the red curb) There is a chance you will be ticketed by the city of San Diego, even if you are sitting in your vehicle.

  • While in your car, you need to stay in a single lane in front of the school.

  • Have your child on the right (passenger) side of the car with materials ready to go. Please do not get out of your car to assist or escort your child.

  • Continue to move forward as far as possible before stopping to let your child out. Pull up to the yellow zone before dropping off picking up your child.

  • Do not drop your child off in the middle of the parking lot.

  • Busses have priority. Please be aware of the buses and allow them the right of way. Stay behind them as often as possible.

  • Do not park in the aisle of the parking lot, get out of your car to get your child, or expect him/her to cut through the parking lot on their own.

  • Do not park in our reserved spaces.

  • Refrain from using cell phones in the parking lot.

  • Only use the pedestrian crosswalks to cross the parking lot. Do not dodge in and out of the traffic flow to get through the parking lot.

BIRTHDAY TREATS

Sunset Hills recognizes that birthdays are a special day for our students. Student birthdays will be honored at school without food. As our school district and country move toward healthier choices for our kids, 26-33 rounds of sweet birthday treats is a big bite to swallow!  In lieu of sending in your child’s favorite dessert item to share with the class, please choose a favorite book to donate to the classroom library, special birthday pencils, erasers, or bookmarks.  Thank you for your understanding!

BIRTHDAY CLUB

"A book is a gift you can open again and again" -Garrison Keillor

Students are invited to celebrate their birthday or other important event with a donation of a hard cover book to the school library.  When a student donates they will receive:

  • Recognition of their donation during their next class library time (with the book being read if possible, or just highlighted if the book is not appropriate for a read- aloud )

  • A small "thank you" gift (like a sticker or pencil)

Students can donate copies of a personal favorite book, or click on the Amazon Wish list link found on the library page of the Sunset Hills website.

VISITORS AND VOLUNTEERS

PUSD Board Policy 4.415 prohibits volunteers on campus unless they have completed a background check and had a TB Skin Test. All visitors and cleared volunteers must report to the office, sign-in, and wear a visitor's pass. The PTA keeps track of volunteer hours and reports them to the Palomar Council.
