      Our Preschool Programs

Poway Unified School District offers preschool opportunities to 3 and 4 year old children* of families residing within the Poway Unified residence boundaries, with 27 locations to choose from. We pride ourselves on maintaining low teacher/child ratios, which allow more opportunities to provide individual attention to each child.

All PUSD Preschools provide safe and nurturing learning environments for young children that promote their emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development. All Preschool programs are developmentally, linguistically and culturally appropriate. Our programs encourage respect for the feelings and rights of others. Classes support each child’s physical development by providing indoor and outdoor space, equipment, materials, and guidelines for active play and movement that are healthy and safe.

Children's experiences both at home and at school are the foundation for life-long feelings of self worth, competence, and a love of learning. We encourage families to be involved in their child's early school experiences. The preschool has an open door policy that encourages parents to participate in daily activities. The environment of each program is planned to provide stimulating and challenging materials and activities. Just like Transitional Kindergarten/Kindergarten through 12th grades, Preschool has Learning Standards with readiness for entry into Kindergarten in mind: Social Emotional Development, Physical Development, Reading/Writing Readiness, Listening/Speaking, Mathematics, Science, History/Social Sciences, and Technology.

* Children whose 5th birthday is between 9/2/2021 and 12/2/2021 are eligible for Transitional Kindergarten (TK), not preschool. Please see PUSD's TK Website for information on Transitional Kindergarten.

Tuition/Fee- Based Programs

Tuition-based programs offer classes in two environments: Part Day or Full Day. Part Day classes are three hours long and are held 2 days per week for 3 year olds or 3 days per week for 4 year olds. Parents may choose to participate regularly to reduce their fee or sign up as a non-participant.

Full Day classrooms are open 7:30 to 5:30, Monday through Friday. Click below to see tuition costs. Full Day classes are licensed by the State Department of Social Services/ Community Care Licensing.

State-Funded Program

PUSD offers State Preschool in two environments. These classrooms require income eligibility. In collaboration with the federal Head Start program, we offer a six-hour class combining the benefits of both Head Start and State Preschool programs. We also offer a three-hour State-funded class. Both types of class meet Monday through Friday.

One free meal is included for all students in the 3-hour classes and 2 meals for the 6-hour classes.

All classes are licensed by the State Department of Social Services/ Community Care Licensing, and participate in the California Quality Rating and Improvement System (CA-QRIS). Our current QRIS Rating is at the highest levels in all classrooms.

PUSD’s State Preschool program is funded by the California Department of Education, which requires an annual evaluation of childcare and development services. PUSD uses evaluations tools to increase program quality standards and to plan and deliver developmentally appropriate activities, including Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ), Desired Results Development Profile (DRDP), Environment Rating Scale (ERS), and annual DRDP Parent Survey.
