Current Status of GATE
The PUSD will continue to identify students for GATE and provide appropriate differentiated instruction in GATE cluster classrooms for GATE identified students. However, funding resources will not be available for enrichment or supplemental curriculum purchases.
In grades 3-5, GATE identified students are placed as clusters, within otherwise heterogeneous classrooms. GATE students in grades 6-8 will also be placed into heterogeneous cluster classes, with the possible option of some homogeneous groupings in Language Arts and Social Science. Middle school mathematics courses are structured such that all students are placed according to individual mathematical ability and achievement. Science, Physical Education, and elective classes are completely heterogeneous.
At the high school level, gifted students are encouraged to participate in honors and/or advanced placement courses in their areas of interest/expertise. GATE Coordinators serve as resources for teachers, parents, and students, as well as monitor GATE student achievement. Specific class placement needs are best discussed with school guidance counselors, as gifted students should focus their learning and class schedules in preparation for higher education and/or career opportunities.
