AT-HOME TEST KITS
FEDERAL PROGRAM: Every household in the U.S. is eligible to order four free at-home COVID-19 tests. (one order per residential address)
These rapid antigen at-home tests are free through the federal government. The website says orders will usually ship in 7-12 days, and will begin shipping in late January.
You can order your tests now, so you have them when you need them:
https://www.covidtests.gov/
Click here for FAQs about this free test kit program.
STATE PROGRAM: On Wednesday, January 5, 2022, PUSD received a shipment of State-provided COVID test kits for students. These at-home testing kits were distributed to students at school. Each kit contains two tests. Parents/Guardians may use the tests at their discretion as outlined below:
-
As a screening tool to ensure your child is healthy to continue to attend school, particularly if your child is not showing any symptoms; if the test is positive, notify your school and follow the guidelines here
-
If your child already has had a positive test, you may use one of the tests in the kit on or after Day 5 of isolation, as evidence of a negative result before being allowed to return to school. In an effort to maintain in-person learning, and address the lack of available testing appointments at local clinics, the at-home tests will be accepted as evidence of your child’s negative result.
-
If your child is quarantining as a close contact, the tests can also be used as evidence of a negative result. Follow the updated testing and quarantine guidelines here.
-
Any additional tests should be saved for if or when your child might experience symptoms or be named as a close contact to a positive case.
IMPORTANT! If you do NOT want your child to receive a test kit to bring home, please communicate that clearly to your child, and send this opt-out form with them to school. As you know, these tests are very scarce so we do not want any to go to waste.
Thank you for your patience and partnership in keeping our students and staff safe!
VACCINE CLINIC INFORMATION
Sharp HealthCare will be hosting vaccination clinics periodically at PUSD schools for anyone in our community five years and older who would like to receive their first or second Pfizer COVID vaccine as well as any PUSD staff or families who qualify for a booster shot (at least six months after their completing their initial Pfizer vaccine series).
There are no upcoming clinics scheduled at PUSD schools at this time.
However, you can sign up for appointments at local pharmacies at myturn.ca.gov
VACCINE MANDATE
On October, 1, 2021, the Governor announced that he will mandate COVID vaccines for all students attending any public or private school in-person, once the vaccine is fully authorized by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). The mandate would take effect for 7th through 12th graders following the FDA’s full approval of the vaccine for children ages 12 and over. The mandate could take effect for students 12 and older by July 2023, depending on the timing for full federal approval for a COVID-19 vaccine for that age range. COVID vaccine requirements for students in kindergarten through 6th grade would be phased in after the vaccine is formally approved by the FDA for younger children. This means that the COVID vaccine would be added to the list of existing vaccine requirements for all children attending school in California. Exemptions for medical and personal beliefs would apply. As more details emerge, we will share them with you. With the Governor's announcement, testing weekly for unvaccinated staff will eventually be removed as an option, and all school staff will be required to be vaccinated no later than when the requirement takes effect for students. Our priority is to continue to keep our staff and students healthy and safe, and as such, we will continue to follow any CDPH guidelines and public health orders, as mandated by the State.
POWAY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
COVID-19 DASHBOARD
Due to a backlog of cases with the public health department and the influx of at-home testing kits, we will no longer wait for official confirmation of a positive case before adding it to this dashboard. All positive COVID-19 cases reported to Poway Unified school sites and offices will be posted to this page. For the purposes of this dashboard, PUSD is distinguishing between school-based cases and community-based cases, with two separate columns for every month in the table below:
- "S.B." School-Based cases:
a. school-based cases will potentially impact individuals' health and wellness at our school or office because there may be site-related exposure OR a positive case was on campus during an infectious period
b. a school-based case MAY cause classroom closure or other precautionary measures
c. we will follow the
San Diego County Office of Education Decision Tree and Guidelines around isolating and notifying close contacts, as needed
- Known "C.B." Community-Based cases:
a. community-based cases DO NOT impact individuals' health and wellness at our school or office because no one at the site was in close contact with the positive individual during the infectious period. Per the CDC definition, this means no one at the site was within 6 feet of the infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days prior to test specimen collection) until the time the patient was isolated
b. this dashboard will include all
known community-based cases related to PUSD; this dashboard may not reflect all community-based cases involving our staff and students because PUSD relies on notification from public health or self-reporting from staff or families
c. we will follow the
San Diego County Office of Education Decision Tree and Guidelines around isolating the positive case, as needed
