ABSTRACT
284 Poway Unified School District teachers from 24
school sites participated in the discussion of time and learning.
Using the National Education Commission on Time and Learning’s
final report, Prisoners of Time as their discussion guide, the
teachers read and discussed the findings in the document, as related to
their school site. The Teacher Discussion Findings include four
overarching recommendations: 1) Most schools agree that the current
school calendar needs to be restructured to meet the needs of all
students, 2) All schools agreed that a more flexible schedule provides
time for “protected” academic instruction and non-academic
activities, 3) All schools agree that regular, professional time is
required to assure and improve student learning, and 4) Teachers believe
there are too many tests; too much instructional time is taken for the
preparation and administration of tests; test results are meaningless to
students and teachers because test results are either provided too late
or without interpretation of data; there is no student accountability to
the tests given; and tests are not aligned to the curriculum. The
Teacher Discussion Findings also include specific direction and/or
solutions to each of the overarching recommendations.
