Abstract

A review of the literature on Year-round education and its effects on: (1) Summer Learning Loss, (2) Student Achievement, (3) Attendance, (4) Student Attitude, (5) Teacher Attitude, (6) Intersessions, (7) Extra-curricular Activities, (8) Parent Concerns, (9) Community Concerns, (10) Costs, and (11) Facilities was done by Candy Smiley, Staff Developer. The review focused on those studies of single-track calendars and includes an annotated bibliography. General Findings of the review found no negative effects on student achievement and clearly Year-round education is producing student academic performance equal to and in many cases better than that of the Traditional calendar school structure, especially for at-risk students. Teachers believe there is less learning loss for those in Year-round education and has a positive impact in terms of student attitudes and behavior.
