Orchestra Back-To-School Night
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to the Poway Unified School District Middle School Orchestra and Music Appreciation programs!
In the following
pages I have compiled information about the programs
offered in the middle schools.
Playing a musical instrument is a very exciting event and one I hope your young musician will enjoy for many years to come.
MUSIC APPRECIATION is offered to non music students. Students will learn about music and experience creating music. Students also learn to understand various instruments, read music, and explore important genres of music. Throughout the course, students will be requested to bring to each class period and maintain their student binder with three packets. Assessments are based on effort and completion of assignments. Good class participation, completion of homework in class and classroom projects will guarantee a fun class and a good grade.
INTERMEDIATE ORCHESTRA is offered to 6th grade students who
have played one year or less on a string instrument (violin, viola, cello,
or bass).
This class meets every other day. Students are expected
to bring their instrument, music and pencil to each class.
Students will be given class time to practice on difficult sections of
music for extra assistance.
Two
or more concerts will be scheduled during the school year, and students will be
requested to wear concert attire to each performance.
ADVANCED ORCHESTRA is offered to 7th and 8th grade students who have played one or more years on a string instrument. This class meets every other day. Students are expected to bring their instrument, music and a pencil to each class. Students will be given class time to practice on difficult sections of music for extra assistance. Two or more concerts will be scheduled during the school year, and students will be requested to wear concert attire to each performance.
Students playing either violin or viola will be requested to either rent or purchase an instrument to bring to class. Those playing cello will be able to use a school cello during class, however the student is requested to provide his/her own for use in concerts. Students playing bass will be allowed to use the school bass during both class and for concert performances.
Learning to play a musical instrument requires much patience on the part of the student, teacher and parent.
