3D Computer Animation 1-2 : is a multilevel class that focuses on the art of computer animation. In level 1-2, students will learn the basics of the principles of animation, design, animation software (Maya), modeling, storyboard development, script writing, character development, and application of these skills to be successful.   Advanced students will work in a production group to create a small-animated movie.   This course meets PUSD Fine Art credit, PUSD Computer Competency at the school, and UC/CSU ‘f’ Elective Credit (Students must complete 1 and 2 to receive UC/CSU ‘f’ credit).

Objectives:   All students will be able to:

  • Sketch by hand
  • Create pictorial drawings and 3D models or prototypes
  • Demonstrate knowledge of CAD or 3Ds Max and be able to choose the appropriate tools to save production time and meet timelines.
  • Work as a team

Computer Animation 1-2 supply needs are:

  • Industrial Design Clay ( Chavant)
  • Portfolio (1½ three ring binder)
  • Photo Paper (8 ½ x 11)
  • Plotter Paper
  • Drawing paper (8 ½ x 11)

*(Supplies for animation students are available through the $30 donation as a courtesy only and will be considered as a donation only. The donation supports your supplies and classroom technology)

These supplies are consumable; therefore it is vital that each student obtains their very own; whether through the instructor or yourself.   Please see me for suggestions if you are having trouble obtaining supplies for any reasons.

Assignments: A few student assignment instructions and syllabi are on line at http://www.powayusd.com/pusdphs/phsanimation/. Students are required to take Cornell notes during software demonstrations and will be graded on the notes.   Students are responsible for their own learning and will receive a grade on the quality of their work.   Self-discipline in turning in assignments is critical to having a passing and high grade.   Most assignments are projects.   Students will also be expected to give a presentation in class.

Turning in work: It is required that every student in the class completes every assignment or they will earn an incomplete in the class indicated on their report card.   Students that earn an incomplete will have 5 weeks to complete the work after the incomplete is received or it will turn into an F. Statistically, only 50% of students that earn an incomplete finish the work; so be proactive, don’t get behind, and turn all your work in on time.

Grading:   Student daily assignments are graded out of a 100% point scale. The final in level 2 is worth approximately 2/3rds or 66% of your grade.  Level 1 final will be announced and its value.  The students overall grade is based upon your cumulative points during the semester divided by the possible points.   Each student has the possibility of receiving an “A” in the class because there is no curve, just points.

Competitions and Awards: Students will be strongly encouraged to enter local, state, and national competitions; such as, Del Mar Fair, VICA, BYDV, Botball, and FIRST ROBOTICS. Goal setting and time management is vital to competing.

Make-up work: Students are responsible to have all missed work made up by the end of each grading period.   Students can complete tutorials any time during the semester for full credit. Students can redo all assignments turned in on time receiving 100% credit.   If assignments are turned in late they can only receive up to 50% credit unless stated otherwise.

Attendance: Students arriving after the tardy bell will be late and marked TARDY.   After 5 accumulated tardy a referral will go to the office.

Fundraisers: We will be conducting fundraisers to support some of the equipment and software needs / upgrades for the courses.   All students are encouraged to participate in the fundraisers for the class, but of course are not obligated to do so or are required.   The idea in participating is for students to feel an ownership in their work and the classroom.

Classroom Policies:

  1. Start of Class: Be in your seat and ready to learn when the bell rings
  2. Be Prepared: Bring your notebook, pencil and necessary animation materials to class.
  3. Class Work: All students are expected to always be working on animation even if they have their assignment done.   Find something to do that is animation related, or extra credit. Exemplify a strong work ethic and be proactive in your learning.
  4. Be respectful of others, your teacher and the environment (refer to the 6 pillars).
  5. Bathroom/Hall Pass: Students need to wait the first 20 minutes before using the pass. Only one student out on a pass at a time.
  6. School Rules: All PHS school policies and rules apply in class.
  7. Computers Areas: Are to be kept clean, as well as the area around them clean.
  8. NO FOOD in the classroom.   This includes water and drinks.
  9. NO HORSEPLAYING in the classroom

Expectation: Students are to turn in all assignments and on time!
