BEGINNING CHOIR is open to all women grades 9-12. There is no audition requirement.
CONCERT CHOIR is next choir in sequence, for grades 9-12. An audition is necessary, and knowledge of music theory is absolutely necessary. While the Concert Men and Concert Women meet at separate class periods, this is a large combined mixed voice choir.
WOMEN’S ENSEMBLE is the advanced choir open for grades 10-12 through audition only. Outside time is required. Activities will include school and community performances. The Women’s Ensemble represents the school at district and state levels in adjudicated festivals.
DIE LIEDERS is the top choir at Poway High, open to grades 10-12 by audition only. Advanced choral and vocal technique is taught in a small choir setting of 20-26 students. Outside time is required. Activities will include school and community performances. The Die Lieders represents the school at district and state levels in adjudicated festivals.
MEN’S CHORUS meets after-school at 6.5 period. It is open to all men interested in singing and will participate in the Madrigal Dinner and Concerts.
There are three concerts a year: Fall and Winter are concert dress - robes, gowns, and tuxs and Spring is a fun-filled costumed theme extravaganza. Last year’s theme was Rock ‘n Elvis featuring the music of Elvis, the Beach Boys, Doo-Wop, Jersey Boys and more. In addition to the concerts is the Madrigal Dinner event. Die Lieders, Women’s Ensemble and Men’s Chorus combine for an evening of Yuletide pageantry and song in medieval costumes and decorations.
Die Lieders and Women’s Ensemble participate in a Spring Tour to compete in musical festivals. Last year’s trip was to Washington DC and included tours of Mt Vernon and the Capitol, and visits to Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, the Washington Monument and the Smithsonian Institute. Previous years’ trips include Disney World in Florida for the Disney Honors Festival and San Francisco. Fundraising is required to defray the cost of participating. View photos on the Scrapbook page.
Choral students have the opportunity to audition for the Southern California Regional Honor Choir and All-State Honor Choir sponsored by the Southern California Vocal Association (SCVA) and American Choral Directors Association (ACDA).
