Inequality
1/3 n < -7
In this equality you have to get n alone.
First you have to move the 1/3 to the other side of the less than sign. In order to do that, you have to do the opposite operation to get rid of the 1/3. So it would look like this:
1/3 n < -7
¸
1/3
Second, whatever you do to one side you have to do to the other. So, you would divide –7 by 1/3 leaving n alone. It would look like this:
1/3 n < -7
¸ ¸
1/3 1/3
Third, instead of dividing –7 by 1/3, you would multiply –7 by the reciprocal of 1/3 which would be 3/1. Then it would look like this:
-7/1 x 3/1
Fourth, after you do the problem, you would be left with
-21/1 which is equal to –21.
Then you would have n < -21.
Lastly, when you make your graph, you would put a line through all of the numbers before –21, and that are less than –21, such as, -22, -24 and so on. Then you would put an open circle around –21 because it does not equal n.
