Question 11.) Tom has 7 fewer compact discs than Kyle. Tom has 42 compact discs does Kyle have?

The first step to this problem is to:

1.) Let C= the number of compact discs Kyle has.

2.) Tom has 42 discs which is 7 fewer than Kyle has so, if you add 7 to 42 you will get the number of compact discs Kyle has. In math, what you do to one side of the equation you must do to the other side. This is called property of equality.

          So, the equation of this problem is C-7=42

3.) The end of this equation should end up looking like this:

C-7=42

+7 +7

--------------

C= 49

Kyle has 49 compact discs
