Computer Problem #1

Solve for X and check

            X - (- 3/4) = 1/6

First, instead of subtract you add the opposite.

So now it looks like this…

            X + (+ 3/4) = 1/6

Then, you subtract 3/4 from each side, because if you subtract 3/4 from a positive 3/4 you would get 0. You want to get 0 so you could have only X. But if you subtract 3/4 from one side you need to subtract it from the other side because of property of equality. So it looks like this…

            X + (+ 3/4) = 1/6

                     - 3/4    - 3/4

That would mean that X would equal 1/6 – 3/4. Then, you find the LCM of the denominators (6 and 4) which is 12. So then you multiply the numinator by how many times you multiplied the denominator by. And you get 2/12 – 9/12. Then it looks like this…

             X + (+ 3/4) = 1/6 * 2/2 =    2/12

                      - 3/4    - 3/4 * 2/2 = - 9/12

Then X would equal 2/12 – 9/12. Then you would subtract 9 from 2.You would then get      -7/12, so X = -7/12. Then it should look like this…

             X + (+ 3/4) = 1/6 * 2/2 =    2/12

                      - 3/4    - 3/4 * 2/2 = - 9/12

                                           X = -7/12

CHECK

First you write the problem

            X - (- 3/4) = 1/6

Then you substitute your answer with X…

            -7/12 – (- 3/4) = 1/6

Instead of subtract, add the opposite

            -7/12 + (+ 3/4) = 1/6

Next you solve -7/12 + (+ 3/4) to see if it equals 1/6 and if it doesn’t it you should check your work. It should now look like this…

            -7/12 + (+ 3/4) = 1/6

            -7/12 + (+9/12) = 2/12=1/6

                                1/6 =1/6

And now you know X equals -7/12.
