                              Playland Park                                       Funland Park

                              y=7+.75                                               y=12.5+.5x

Substitution

7+.75x=12.5+.5x

                                               -7   -.5x     -7    -.5x

.25x=5.5

                                                      /.25    /.25

x=22

y=7+.75(22)

y=7+16.5

y=23.5

          Problem: Playland Park charges $7admission plus $.75 per ride. Funland Park charges $12.50 admission plus $.50 per ride. For what number of rides is the total cost the same at both parks?

          To solve this problem, I first wrote a system of equations. x was the number of each ride and y was the total cost. The $7 and $12.50 were the admission prices for each park on each equation. Then, I just used substitution and solved it.  I ended up with x=22, which means at 22 rides, both parks cost the same. Then I substituted 22 into one of the equations, and got 23.5. That meant at 22 rides, both parks cost the same at $23.50.
