A Study of Wellness for Life Sub-Contract I
Wellness and Stress

Minimum of 12.5 hours required. It may take you a lot longer to complete
all of the work and pass this sub-contract. If you really want a good grade
and do quality work, this will take you longer than the minimum.
It is recommended that all of the assignments be typed, however, that may
be arranged with the homeroom teacher.
At
the end of this sub-contract you will:
1.
Understand the benefits of studying about a "healthy you".
2.
Know concepts related to promotion of health.
3.
Know how to contact various health service organizations.
4.
Define the causes stress and methods of relief.
5.
Describe the basics of good dental hygiene.
6.
Describe ways of keeping your skin, hair and nails healthy.
Methods
of Learning: You will use the Internet, use resource texts, engage
in activities, create projects, and discuss important learning, both verbally
and in writing which deal with Wellness and Stress.
Evaluation:
This sub-contract is worth 100 points. In order to earn points, you
must complete the various activities satisfactorily including a pre-test
and post-test for the sub-contract, and completion of a health notebook
(3 ring binder preferred) containing all of your health assignments.
The
sub-contract is divided into different areas. You must perform those
activities which are asterisked *** and you may choose a variety of activities
from those without an asterisk, as long as they fulfill a total of 100
points.

1. Lay your hand (palm side up) on your desk. Count how many times you can open and close your hand for one minute. Did your hand get tired after about 45 seconds? See how long your hand can pump. How does this compare to the pumping of the heart?
2. Lay your hand (palm side up) on your lap or desk. Take your
first two fingers of the opposite hand and and lightly press them into
the thumb side of your wrist, one inch above the beginning of the wrist.
Feel for your pulse (your heart beat).
a. Measure your resting heart beat, when you are calm and relaxed.
Count the
beats for 6 seconds. Now multiply that times 10 for the number of
beats per
minute. Write this down.
b. Measure your active heart rate. Jog in place for 1 minute.
Count the beats for 6
seconds. Now multiply that times 10 for the number of beats per minute.

1. Create an informational booklet or two sided pamphlet on how to keep your skin looking healthy. The finished product must be done using either a computer, colored pencils, or markers. You may either draw or cut out pictures.
2. Go to a local pharmacy or health food store. Pick up 3 brochures on skin, hair and nail care. Write a summary for each brochure
3. Go to a local pharmacy or health food store and interview one of the personnel in the supplement section. To complete this assignment you must have:
1. Get answers to the following;
a. What care and products are recommended for acne?
b. What care and products are recommended for overly dry skin?
c. What products are recommended for biting nails; dry, cracking,
pealing
nails; scaly scalp, hair falling out.

If you didn't do well, your homeroom teacher will counsel you on remediation
for this sub-contract. You must have your homeroom teacher's approval
to continue.
