HOMEWORK POLICY

A new PUSD Board Policy was established in June 2005 regarding homework.  you can read the highlights and guidelines of the policy by visiting this PUSD page.

My goal in assigning homework is to help students build good study habits, be responsible and take ownership of their learning, and reinforce / practice what they are learning in the classroom.

Homework should not exceed 1 hour each night Monday - Thursday.  This will include:
þ 30 minutes minimum of independent reading (AR book of their choice)
 þ Math - Monday - Thursday
þ Writing - if assignments are not completed in class.
þ Science - about two times per week.
 þ
History - if assignments are not completed in class.

Project based assignments will have notification letters sent home, regular check points to monitor progress, and plenty of time for completion.  The projects will be worked on mostly in class.

Tests and quizzes should be studied for.  In most cases the students will know the date of a major unit test about a week in advance.  "Pop quizzes" can be given any time.

The students will have an assignment log and are expected to write down assignments they did not complete in class, any homework, and upcoming tests.  It will be the students' responsibility to make sure they have their log in each class AND write down the assignments.  It is a good idea for students to get the phone numbers of two classmates that they can check with in case they are absent, or suddenly "forget" the assignment.

Parents are encouraged to inform the student's homeroom teacher of any problems regarding homework so we may address it.
