2/10/07  By this time last year, Buckeye and SW were frequenting the nest much more than they have this year.  With the temperatures in single digits and teens most of the day over the past few weeks they have stayed away (and hopefully are keeping warm.)  We are wondering if this will mean eggs later in the season than usual?
In past years we have had eggs between 3/11 and 3/18 (see stats page).

2/21/07  8:51 AM
Both birds caught in the nest box this morning ... a good sign.
Hard to tell at this point, but looks like they are favoring the left corner again this year ...
(see stats page)

2/21  11:27 AM Buckeye's back

2/22  11:24 AM  On favorite perch for better part of an hour

2/22  2:52 PM  Both in the nest ...
Both birds have been at the nest for a few minutes at a time off and on throughout the day today.

2/23  8:19 AM  Brief stop

2/25  10:00 AM staying dry in the corner of the window

2/25  10:36 AM
"Will this weather ever stop?"

2/25  10:42 AM  "Humm, I know those pigeons are out there..."
Buckeye seems to be hanging around the nest more these days ~ trying to lure SW to join him maybe ... they usual behavior we see this time of year.

Scott Wright, photographer for ODNR, visited the site on 2/26/07 and captured these beautiful pictures (used with permision).  Above and below is SW.

Buckeye is at the nest frequently these days ...

Despite still chilly temperatures (mid-30s) and work being down on the nest's side of TT, Buckeye spent most of the day 3/3 at the nest calling to SW.  She stopped by several times to discuss the best spot for the eggs this season.  The following series of pictures shows their activities...

3/3/07  8:16 AM
"Here is where I think she should pit the eggs."

3/3/07  9:54 AM
"A little grooming while waiting for my lady."

3/3/07  10:38 AM
"There goes my snack..."

3/3/07  11:35 AM
"Aren't I the cute one?"

3/3/07  12:59 PM
"I bow to you my lady..."

3/3/07  2:56 PM
"Is this where you want the eggs?"
"Yes, yes,  right here."

3/3/07  3:51 PM
"Let me make this just a bit more comfortable..."
3/4/07  With it barely 31° and cloudy all day, and a dusting of snow in the morning, Buckeye was the only one who appeared in the nest.

3/4/07  7:12  AM
"That white stuff again!"

3/4/07  4:30 PM
"Here, the eggs go right here."

3/4/07  4:48 PM
"Look SW, I can dance too."

3/5/07  11:54  AM

3/5/07  2:46 PM

3/6/07  7:50 AM
16°  with light snow as Buckeye looks out over the downtown area

3/6/07  6:01 PM  18°
Buckeye fluffed up ~ probably in an effort to stay warm

3/7/07  6:54 AM
"Not AGAIN!"

3/7/07  6:15 PM
"All day with this stuff!"
Not above 26° in the last 24 hours

Reports say the long range forecast is predicting temperatures in the 50s by next week for the Cleveland area, however it is difficult to imagine Buckeye and SW wanting to lay eggs any time soon.  We are keeping a watchful eye on the nest though.  Looking at "first egg" dates over the past 4 seasons (the 18th, 12th, 16th, and 11th) and figuring the average - we might see an egg on the 14th.

3/8/07  3:47  PM
"Hey, SW, come on down - we can build a snow man."

3/8/07  4:38 PM
"This stuff is cold!"

3/8/07  6:02  PM  26°

"I'll just test out the seat back here."

3/9/07  9:18 AM  34°
"I'm not stepping in that stuff again!"

3/9/07  3:22 PM  59°
A lot of interest in the left corner
(BIG temperature change)

3/9/07  4:12 PM
"Hey, I was here first..."

Mr. Wright spent several hours at the nest 3/9/07 and reports that SW is staying close to the nest now... A good sign.  While he was there he was able to catch SW in flight (pictured to the right).

3/10/07  7:44 AM
Sharing Breakfast

3/10/07  9:16 AM
"Hummm, what's this?"

3/10/07  1:14 PM 47°
More interest in the right side of the box today

3/10/07  4:24 PM
"This side looks more comfortable."

3/10/07  6:34 PM
"That is a good spot sweety."

There has been increased interest in the right side of the nest box today.  Light rain in the area with temperatures reaching the mid 50s and more activity around the nest box may mean an egg within a week ...

3/11/07  6:37 AM
"This side, right here."
"No, over here..."

3/11/07  8:11 AM
"Eenie ...."

3/11/07  8:12 AM
"Meanie..."
The debate over where in the nest box to lay the eggs continues.

3/12/07  10:34 AM
Buckeye digging a hole

3/12/07  10:35 AM
"Done."

3/12/07  11:57 AM
SW arrives to inspect

3/13  The weather has gotten considerably warmer - in the 70s!  Mr. Wright has been to the nest several times in the last few days and reports that SW is "with egg" and sticking close to the nest box.  We are moving into egg watch alert mode as it could be any day now ....

3/13/07  12:50 PM
Buckeye on left, SW on right

3/13/07  4:55 PM
"Is it time yet?"

3/18/07  5:18 PM
SW is "heavy" in the rear.

3/13/07  6:31 PM
...and it could happen under the cover of darkness ... one of SW's favorite tricks.

3/14/07  7:45 AM
No one home and no egg yet ...
heavy rain in the forecast for today

The pictures below show SW "playing" with us ...

3/14/07  10:52 AM   SW on left ( as you look at the box) then, at 1:43 PM, on the right.
She is obviously carrying an egg ... the question is when and where is she going to lay it?

Mr. Wright, again, brings us beautiful shots of the birds.  He visited the nest on 3/14/07 and reports we will have eggs in the next few days!  Keep watching!

Buckeye bringing, and giving, food to SW.  She isn't sharing!

3/15/07  8:27 AM  34°
"NOT again!"

3/15/07  4:32 PM
SW still holding the egg

3/15/07  7:09 PM
3 indentations ...
They are playing with us.
